    • While a book block (P) is nipped between a pair of clamping plates (1a, 1b) and passes through processing units (B to D) in succession, perfect book bind processing is carried out. Two or more of the processing units (B to D) have pairs of members (2b, 2c; 3c, 3d; 4a, 4b) which engage or come into contact with both sides of a back surface of the book block A thickness of the book block is measured by a measuring unit (6) before the book binding processing is started. When a thickness of next book block is measured by a measuring unit during the book bind processing of a previous book block, a control section (7) stores a measured value of the thickness of the next book block in a memory (8). When the previous book block reaches a predetermined position on a conveying path, a gap between the pair of members of the processing unit located upstream of a position of the previous book block is adjusted based on the measured value stored in the memory. Thereafter, a gap between the pair of members of the processing unit located downstream of the predetermined position is adjusted based on the measured value stored in the memory when the previous book block passes through the processing unit. After the book bind processing of the previous book block is completed, a gap between the pair of clamping plates is adjusted based on the measured value stored in the memory.

    • The present invention provides a collator system comprising a sheet collating device (1a) in which a plurality of sheet supply shelves (2a-2h) are provided, a stack of sheets to be collated are supported on each sheet supply shelf (2a-2h), the sheets are fed one by one from each sheet supply shelf to a collating section (6a) for each collating operation and one sheet bundle is thus collated, a sheet loading device (21) for receiving the sheet bundle collated from the sheet collating device (1a), a controller (14) for controlling operations of the sheet collating device (1a) and the sheet loading device (21), a sheet feeding error detecting section provided on each sheet supply shelf of the sheet collating device (1a), and a sheet feeding error display unit (17) connected to the controller. When the sheet feeding errors are detected by the sheet feeding error detecting section, the controller (14) outputs a stop signal to the sheet collating device (1a) and continues the collating operation which is being performed during the sheet feeding error detection but stops the collating operation to be started after the sheet feeding error detection, and displays, by switching, the sheet supply shelf where the sheet feeding errors occur and the contents of the sheet feeding errors on the same display screen of the sheet feeding error display unit (17) for each collating operation performed after the stop signal is output and before the collating operation of the sheet collating device (1a to 1n) is completely ended.

Collated sleets to be stitched are transported along a first transport path portion (29) into a sheet stitching station (80) independently of different sheet stitching patterns. After sheet stitching operation of a stitching head (31), a sheet transport path for stitched sheets is divided into two sheet transport path portions, one is a fifth transport path portion (36a) extending to a sheet eject outlet (19), the other is a third transport path portion (40) extending to a sheet bending station (38), at a branch (K) . A switching gate plate is arranged at the branch (K) so as to selectively switch the transport path portions depending on whether the bending operation is required or not. A fourth transport path portion (42) extends from the sheet bending station (38) to the sheet eject outlet (19). Thus stitched sheets are all delivered from the only one sheet eject outlet (19).
