    • A composition comprising interacting a blend of a neutralized sulfonated polymer containing from about 4 meq. of metal sulfonate per 100 g. of polymer up to 200 meq. per 100 g. of polymer, said sulfonate polymer being at least 95% neutralized, complexed with a second polymer containing basic nitrogen atoms incorporated, pyridine copolymerized or grafted thereon, said polymer containing basic nitrogen from about 4 meq. up to 500 meq. per 100 g. of polymer, wherein the molar ratio of metal sulfonate groups to that of basic nitrogen atoms varies from about 0.03 to about 30; wherein said polymer containing basic nitrogen groups have the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is an alkyl group having about 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is an alkyl group having about 1 to about 18 carbon atoms, x is about 50 to about 99.8 wt. %, and y is about 0.2 to about 50 wt. %.

    • A novel process, and the articles of manufacture, or compositions, formed thereby, wherein a Group II-A metal, or compound thereof, can be ion-exchanged onto coal, and thereafter a Group I metal physically admixed or otherwise incorporated therewith, so that the composition can be pyrolyzed, and gasified, to form a high-BTU, intermediate-BTU or synthesis fuel gas. Suitably, the Group II metal, or alkaline earth metal, can be directly ion-exchanged onto a low rank coal, without necessity of any pretreatment, by contact with a basic solution of a Group II-A metal compound since, of course, low rank coals contain natural ion-exchange sites. An alkaline earth metal, or metals, can also be ion-exchanged onto a high rank coal, notably one deficient in natural active exchange sites, such as a subbituminous or bituminous coal, by (a) contacting, heating and soaking the coal in an alkali solution of a Group I-A metal compound sufficient to incorporate said metal compound, or cation portion thereof, into said coal and form ion-exchange sites, (b) or by oxidation of the high rank coal by contact with an oxidizing agent, preferably an oxygen-containing gas (air), peroxygen compound, oxidizing acid or the like, to form ion-exchange sites, ion-exchanging a Group II metal onto the active sites thus created, and thereafter admixing or otherwise incorporating the Group I metal to form the desired article of manufacture, or composition.

    • A process wherein a feed comprising a nitrogen-containing hydrocarbon compound, or compound containing a carbon-nitrogen bond, is contacted in the presence of hydrogen over an iron catalyst at reaction conditions sufficient to cleave said carbon-nitrogen bond and denitrogenate said nitrogen-containing hydrocarbon compound, or compounds. An aromatic heterocyclic nitrogen-containing hydrocarbon, or hydrocarbons, containing at least one aryl carbon-nitrogen bond, or feedstock containing such hydrocarbon, or hydrocarbons, is contacted with hydrogen, preferably over a fused iron catalyst, at reaction conditions sufficient to cleave the aryl carbon-nitrogen bond, or bonds, without significant hydrogenation of the aromatic ring portion of the molecule. The aryl carbon-nitrogen bond, or bonds, are cleaved, and the cleavage site, or sites, healed with hydrogen, without saturation of the aromatic ring portion of the molecule to which the nitrogen atom of the parent compound was bonded.
