    • A power supply and scanning line deflection circuit for a picture display device. The power supply circuit comprises an inductance and a switch which switches at line frequency, the inductance forming part of a resonant network during the cut-off period of the switch. The line deflection circuit comprises another switch which also switches at line frequency and a line deflection coil which during the cut-off period of the switch, which substantially coincides with the retrace period, forms part of a resonant network which also comprises an inductance. A transformer winding is coupled to one of the inductances. During the cut-off period of the switch pulses are developed across this transformer winding which are rectified for generating a supply voltage for a variable load. To reduce the internal impedance of the voltage source thus formed, which may serve, for example as the high voltage supply, means are provided for connecting, at least during a portion of the scanning line retrace period, the transformer winding to the other inductance, such connection conducting substantially no current during the scanning line trace period.

    • In a horizontal deflection circuit, a horizontal oscillator, energized by a supply voltage, develops a horizontal frequency switching signal. A deflection outputs stage is responsive to the switching signal and generates scanning current in a horizontal deflection winding. After commencement of oscillator operation, the voltage developed across a secondary winding of a flyback transformer is rectified and filtered and applied to the horizontal oscillator as the oscillator energizing supply voltage. A start-up supply for developing the oscillator supply voltage during an initial interval includes a source of voltage that is available for use prior to the commencement of oscillator operation, a capacitor, a charging circuit for charging the capacitor from the available voltage source, and a controllable switch coupled to the capacitor and to the oscillator. After the charging circuit has charged the capacitor to a predetermined threshold voltage level, the controllable switch is made conductive to apply the capacitor voltage to the oscillator to commence oscillator operation. The switch is arranged with the capacitor as a relaxation oscillator to begin discharging the capacitor by the load current drawn by the horizontal oscillator. Should the capacitor discharge to a lower threshold level before the flyback-derived supply voltage is developed, the relaxation oscillator changes states to disconnect the horizontal oscillator from the capacitor to initiate a capacitor recharging cycle.

    • A high voltage ultor power supply for a television receiver includes a ferroresonant transformer that is capable of operating over a substantial range of temperature without thereby introducing undesirably large changes in the ultor voltage. The ferroresonant transformer comprises a plurality of windings, a magnetizable core with first and second core sections, and a resonating capacitor. A first of the plurality of windings is wound on the first core section and coupled to a source of exciting current for generating magnetic flux in the core. A second of the plurality of windings is wound on the second core section. The varying magnetic flux that links the second winding generates an alternating polarity output voltage across that winding. To regulate the output voltage, the capacitor is coupled to one of the plurality of windings and develops a circulating current to produce a magnetic flux that aids in magnetically saturating the second core section. The first core section is operated in the magnetically unsaturated or linear region of the B-H loop characteristic of the magnetizable material forming the first core section. A high voltage circuit, responsive to the regulated output voltage, develops the television receiver ultor voltage. The material of the magnetically saturating second core section is selected to have a higher Curie temperature than that of the nonsaturating first core section, resulting in relatively small temperature dependent changes of the ultor voltage.

    • A deflection generator periodically applies a trace voltage to a deflection winding to produce scanning current and periodically generates a retrace pulse voltage across the deflection winding. A supply voltage source develops the trace voltage and also provides energy to circuits, such as a high voltage circuit, coupled to windings of a flyback transformer. The high voltage circuit develops an ultor accelerating potential from the retrace pulse voltage developed across the high voltage winding of the flyback transformer. A controllable switch such as an SCR is coupled to the source and to a secondary winding of the flyback transformer. The trace voltage and energy transfer is regulated by controlling the conduction time of the SCR. The high voltage and other load circuits draw load current from the source through the flyback transformer secondary winding during retrace, resulting in high voltage retrace pulse duration and amplitude variation with variations in load current. To maintain a constant raster width, the conduction time of the SCR is varied such that the trace voltage magnitude varies in the same sense as the retrace pulse voltage amplitude variations.

    • An input transformer primary winding is series coupled with an unregulated voltage source and a bidirectional switch. The secondary winding is coupled to a deflection circuit switch through a second switch. The transformer leakage inductance serves as the source input impedance. The transformer windings and second switch are so polarized as to provide for simultaneous conduction of the bidirectional and second switches. Regulation is achieved by varying the turn-on instant of the bidirectional switch within a deflection cycle. The bidirectional switch is commutated off by a resonant circuit coupled to the switch.
