    • An optical proximity detector of very small size and high resolution is provided by using a light emitting diode (LED) to illuminate a small detection region adjacent to the LED and by using the same LED simultaneously to sense light reflected from an object which enters the detection region. A circuit is provided which continuously forward biases a light emitting diode at a substantially constant bias current, thereby continuously illuminating a small region adjacent to the diode. When an object enters the illuminated region and reflects light back to the LED, it has been found that the impedance of the LED changes by a small amount. This small change in LED impedance and consequently the presence of a light reflecting object in the illuminated region is sensed by the circuit.

    • An electro-optical control comprising a housing, a source of light, a photocell, and an endless belt having a substantially planar run manually movable with a finger. The belt has portions of differing light penetrability. Members on the housing guide the belt in an endless path when the one run of the belt is manually moved. The photocell and the light source are positioned interior of and exterior of the belt. Thus, when the belt is moved, the amount of light from the light source which strikes the photocell is varied, controlling the photocell. The control can include a stop member secured to the belt, engageable with the housing to limit the movement of the belt. In an alternative embodiment, the control includes a light source, a pair of photocells positioned substantially side by side and first and second disc-shaped polarizing filters positioned between the light source and the photocells. One filter is manually rotatable. One filter is also divided into two substantially semicircular filter portions whose directions of polarization are perpendicular to each other so that as the rotatable filter is rotated, the amount of light from the source striking one of the photocells is increased and the amount of light striking the other of the photocells is simultaneously decreased. The rotatable filter is controlled through an endless belt. An endless belt can also control for example a linear motion variable resistor or other devices.

    • A selectively aligned optical switching device including two adjacent translucent discs having mask segments formed on the surfaces thereof, with the first disc including a sleeve extending from the central opening thereof which is received within the central opening of the second disc. A clamping nut threadably engages the sleeve to selectively align the masking segments of the discs relative to each other. This combination of discs is clamped in concentric alignment against a timing hub which in turn is indexed by a pin relative to a rotary shaft. The mask section of the discs is then received in an optical coupling device which provides operating signals in selected coordination with the rotation of the shaft.

    • A contactless switch mechanism for successively energizing individual load devices selected from a plurality of load devices comprises confronting printed circuit boards, each making contact along one margin with a supporting chassis assembly which houses, or may have terminals for connection to, a source of operating power and which houses or may have terminal connections to the plurality of load devices. A first printed circuit board supports a plurality of continuously operating light-emitting devices, one light-emitting device for each load device, the light-emitting devices positioned in a predetermined array and each mounted to direct light toward the second printed circuit board. The second printed circuit board supports a plurality of light detector devices, one associated with each light-emitting device, and each responsive to light received from its associated light-emitting device. Each light detector is coupled to a solid state driver circuit responsive to the associated light detector to energize a load device coupled thereto. Each of the plurality of lightemitters is thus capable of causing energization of an associated load device without a mechanical movement such as normally required for the closure of switch contact. Interposed between the confronting printed circuit boards is a light shield having a single aperture. Selection of individual loads to be energized from amongst the plural loads available for energization is accomplished by means of a stepping motor operated to advance the light shield along a predetermined course and through plural positions along said course, each of said plural positions aligning said aperture. With a single one of said light emitters so as to allow energization of a single load device.

    • A modularized light-responsive switching circuit capable of use in relatively high power applications. The circuit includes a Triac connected as a switching element in series with a power source and a load. The gate electrode of the Triac is connected to a light-responsive gating circuit including a capacitor and at least one light-responsive resistor switchable between two resistance levels. The capacitor is charged when the lightresponsive resistor assumes one resistance level and is discharged into the gate of the Triac when the light-dependent resistor assumes the other resistance level. The components of the switching circuit are encapsulated in a cylindrical module having a screen therein, through which the active surface of the light-responsive resistor can receive light, and having a pair of terminals to connect the module directly into a power circuit.

    • An integrally formed switch structure for changing the level of light upon an electrical impedance from an elongated light source. The switch structure comprises a rotatable sleeve positioned snugly for sliding rotation around the elongated light source, the sleeve having light-opaque and light-transmissive portions. A resiliently biased detent mechanism is used for providing two fixed positions for the sleeve, one of the positions permitting light to pass from the source through the light-transmissive portion of the sleeve to the impedance and the other of the positions interposing the light-opaque portion of the sleeve between the source and the impedance to prevent light from the source from being transmitted to the impedance. The detent mechanism includes a ridge substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the sleeve. The ridge is formed by the intersection of two surface areas on the outer surface of the sleeve so that the sleeve may be held in its operative and inoperative positions by the detent mechanism which bears against a selected one of the surface areas to retain the sleeve in one of the fixed positions. A masking projection extends from the outer surface of the sleeve adjacent the light-transmissive portion of the sleeve for optically isolating the electrical impedance from optical interference from adjoining sleeves. Finally, a lever arm is connected to the sleeve which is manually engageable to rotate the sleeve from one fixed position to the other fixed position.
