    • A vapor recovery nozzle for dispensing fuel, such as gasoline, that can be latched to the filler neck of a tank to be filled. An articulated seal is provided that sealingly engages the filler neck and, when so engaged, forces a piston relatively toward the nozzle to open the flow passageway through the nozzle for the vapors. A valve is provided that is actuated by the piston which, when the nozzle is not in the filler neck, closes to prevent the escape of any vapors that might be contained in the vapor recovery system. Furthermore, the piston carries a valve operating means that functions in conjunction with a flow valve that is located in a conduit extending through the nozzle. This conduit is utilized to sense when the liquid level in the tank rises above the end of the conduit extending from the nozzle to automatically shut off the nozzle and prevent flow of fuel therefrom. The arrangement of the nozzle is such that the vapor recovery passageway extending therethrough is sealed to prevent the entrance of air or other vapor into the system except as may come from the fuel tank.

    • An improved nozzle for a liquid dispensing valve of the automatic shutoff type placed at the end of a hose for the filling of automobile tanks is euipped with an automatic pneumatic device which shuts off the valve when the tank is filled to a level near the edge of the tank filler hole, comprising venturi and passage means controlled by a manuallyoperated lever which, when the valve is open, generates a negative pressure in an associated conduit within the main liquid outlet tube, the associated conduit being closed off at its end and slightly shorter than the main tube in which it is incorporated, part of the external wall of the associated conduit corresponding, at least at its end, to part of the internal wall of the main tube. The control of the shutoff means is effected by a manually-operated lever and through a mechanical linkage which includes an element for breaking this mechanical linkage, thereby allowing the means to stop the dispensing of liquid without moving the lever, the element being controlled by the device sensitive to the negative pressure generated by the venturi means to which the said device is connected through the associated conduit and a calibrated lateral hole made in the end of this associted conduit leading out to the ambient free air. A second calibrated hole is provided at the end of the associated conduit and in its axis leading into the main tube and a third hole of larger diameter is located laterally in the main tube, downstream of the end of the associated conduit and in its immediate vicinity, leading out to the ambient air, so that when the liquid in the tank covers almost simultaneously the three orifices of the end of the valve, the simultaneous increase in the pressure drop in the two calibrated orifices produces the immediate operation of the automatic-shutoff device of the valve.

    • An automatic shut-off nozzle has a pair of diaphragms with a first diaphragm being responsive to the vapor pressure in the tank which is being filled exceeding a predetermined pressure so as to block communication with a second diaphragm, which is subjected to a partial vacuum, with the tank being filled whereby the second diaphragm moves due to an increase in the partial vacuum acting on said second diaphragm to cause closing of a manually operated valve which stops flow through the nozzle. When the liquid in the tank reaches a predetermined level, the second diaphragm moves due to the partial vacuum acting on said second diaphragm being increased so as to cause the valve to again be closed.

    • A fluid dispensing nozzle incorporating an automatic shutoff mechanism responsive to the filling of a receiving tank to a level near its top is provided with mechanical means operable independently of the automatic shutoff mechanism to open a flow passage through the nozzle to permit the complete filling of a receiving tank after the shutoff mechanism has been actuated. The shutoff mechanism includes a movable, pressure-sensitive member which is displaced by a pressure differential created thereon in response to the substantial filling of a receiving tank to pivot a latch out of restraining engagement with a roller on a slide rod normally serving to hold a valve in the nozzle open. The releasing of the latch from the roller causes the slide rod to be shifted by valve spring pressure to close the nozzle valve.

    • A fluid delivery system, such as a petrol pump, wherein there is a flexible hose between the pump and meter and the hosecock, has its main shut-off valve placed between the pump and the hose, a nonreturn pressure-relief valve near the hose end remote from the pump and shut-off valve, and a switch mechanism contained in the hosecock for operating the shut-off valve. Hence, whenever the flow is shut off only the back pressure of the nonreturn valve is felt within the hose, thus permitting the use of light hose and making handling easier. Desirably, the hosecock is provided also with an automatic cutoff or overfill prevention device operative to close the main shuf-off valve when the end of the hosecock dips into the fluid.
