    • A system is provided for deploying a propulsor unit from the hull of a water vehicle, such as a submarine. The system comprises an opening in a submerged portion of the hull that leads to a chamber for storing the propulsor unit, a cover for covering the hull opening to render the surface of the hull substantially continuous and fluid-dynamic, the cover having first and second sides, each of which conforms to the contour of the hull and the propulsor unit being mounted on the second side of the cover, and a pivotal mounting that hingedly connects the cover and the propulsor unit attached thereto across the opening in the hull for allowing the propulsor unit to move from a first stored position within the storage chamber to a second deployed position in the ambient water surrounding the hull. A drive assembly is provided for pivotally moving the cover and its attached propulsor unit between stored and deployed positions. Finally, a steering assembly is provided that includes a rotatable mounting between the propulsor unit and the cover, and the combination of a spur gear and a worm for rotatably moving the propulsor unit to a desired angle with respect to the hull of the submarine.

    • A marine propulsor for submersible vessels or surface vessels powered by underwater propulsion units. A shaftless motor with disk-shaped rotor and stator(s) is mounted in the vessel structure with a blade hub mounted on the rotor, the hub including propeller blades extending beyond the circumference of the vessel housing. The motor is substantially iron-free with much of the rotor/stator volume being occupied by windings, thus providing sufficient power without taking up substantial space or adding burdensome weight. The rotor is journal mounted in the vessel and circumferential thrust bearing assemblies are provided around the rotor/blade hub assembly. A water cooling/lubricating system is provided for the bearings and rotor/stator(s). Power is supplied individually to two stators mounted on either side of the rotor to control electromagnetic forces on the rotor to offset thrust forces and to reduce the magnitude of propulsor induced structural vibration. Rotor excitation current may be inductively supplied, or permanent magnets or low reluctance magnetic material may be mounted in the rotor. Sound insulation is interposed between stators and the vessel structure to dampen ac noise/vibrations. In a dual counter-rotating propulsor embodiment, a thrust transference member is interposed between propulsor assemblies.

    • A jet propulsion engine submergible in water for driving a water craft wherein a drive shaft is connected to an internal combustion engine for rotation thereof. A first turbine is mounted on the drive shaft for rotation therewith for providing a first high velocity stream of water axially through the propulsion engine. A propeller is journalled on the drive shaft adjacent to and downstream of the first turbine for rotation independently of the drive shaft. A second turbine is mounted on the drive shaft adjacent to and downstream of the propeller for rotation therewith for generating a second high velocity stream of water axially through the propulsion engine. The speed of the propulsion engine increases through the effects of the first and second high velocity streams of water for driving the water craft while the propeller becomes less effective until it is rendered free wheeling at cruising speeds of the water craft.

    • A propeller assembly, a so-called rotatable thruster, for propelling, manoeuvering, steering and/or positioning a watercraft, floating docks, pontoons and in particular offshore platforms, includes a propeller (1) having an embracing propeller shroud (2) and mounted on a propeller shaft journalled in a gear housing (3). The gear housing accommodates a bevel gearing through which the propeller shaft is connected to a drive shaft extending through a tubular support strut (4), which is connected at its lower end to the gear housing in order to support the same. The upper end of the support strut is arranged to be rotatably mounted in an opening in a bottom part of the hull of the watercraft, with the propeller shaft extending substantially horizontally, so that the drive shaft can be connected to drive machinery located within the hull and such that the assembly can be rotated about a rotational axis coinciding with the axis of the drive shaft, by means of rotational machinery located within the hull. The propeller shroud (2) is provided with means, for example guide vanes (10) and/or is in itself designed such that the propeller jet exiting from the shroud is directed slightly obliquely downwardly in relation to the direction of the propeller shaft. Advantageously there are arranged in the vicinity of the shroud outlet horizontal guide vanes (11) which deflect the propeller jet obliquely downwardly and radial guide vanes (12) which eliminate rotational movement in the propeller jet.

    • A marine vessel propulsion assembly includes at least one propeller nozzle unit having a rudder associated with it. The propeller nozzle unit has a shroud laterally surrounding the propeller and the shroud is supported so that it can be pivoted about two different axes each extending transversely of the flow direction. In the desired angular position, the shroud can be locked in position. The two pivot axes of the shroud extend perpendicular to one another. The shroud is connected to a shaft extending in the direction of one of the pivot axes and the shaft can be interlocked with shaft guide means. The shroud and the rudder each include the same angle of pitch of at least two degrees relative to the propeller shaft.

    • A water-going vessel propelled via a plurality of parallel sets of two underwater turbines disposed along the underside of said vessel, with each turbine mounted on respective retractable struts. A plurality of sets of turbines extend from respective turrets disposed along the longitudinal midline of the underside of the vessel, each of said turrets rotatable through 360 degrees and each having extending therefrom one turbine set. Hull construction pieces of the vessel preferably comprise an outer and an inner containment wall within which a plurality of touching hollow spheres are sandwiched and wherein a plurality of individual lengths of high strength sheaths are within respective tubes which are parallel with the containment walls and disposed within intrices formed by the spheres. The individual lengths of sheaths are connectable to each other to form a network of sheaths encircling the hull. Stress can be introduced and adjusted within each length of sheath which is a part of the network. Also disclosed is an improved underwater turbine, wherein the improvement comprises a plurality of housings surrounding respective portions of the turbine, with each of said housings having therein rotatable blades and, immediately rearward of said blades, a plurality of nozzle openings through which a gas under pressure can exit in a path of flow directed along the outer wall of said turbine.

    • A water jet propelled boat hull having an axis of forward motion, a bottom and a centerline. A first and a second water duct are provided, each of which has an exit port discharging rearwardly, the exit ports being laterally spaced from the centerline and on opposite sides of the centerline from each other. Inlet ports are located substantially on the centerline at the bottom of the hull. The ducts interconnect respective inlet ports and respective exit ports. A first and a second water jet propulsion device, such as a pump, is disposed respectively in each of the said first and second ducts to move water from the inlet ports and out the exit ports. Because the inlet ports are on the centerline, both ducts will be provided with water, even when the boat is inclined as a consequence of making sharp turns.
