    • To provide a clean operator side (I) of a printing machine, the circumferential and lateral register adjustment of a plate cylinder (20) is located on the machine or drive side (II) of the machine and is formed by a special gearing arrangement; a first gear (12) which is rotatable on an axially shiftable stub shaft (19) of the plate cylinder by being positioned on a bearing thereof, is driven from a second gear (9) which may also drive an offset blanket cylinder (18). The first gear is in meshing engagement with a dual gear, having third and fourth gearings (16, 15), the first, second and third gears being spiral or inclined, and the fourth gear (15), which meshes with an axial fixed fifth gear (13) splined to the shaft fo the cylinder (19), is likewise formed with axial teeth. The combined third and fourth gears can be shifted axially, thus causing rotation of the fourth gear by the "thread" type engagement of the third gear with the first gear, which rotation is transferred to the fifth gear and hence to the plate cylinder; in addition, the axial position of the plate cylinder is independently adjustable by a spindle (29) moving the stub shaft without transmitting rotation thereto or receiving rotation therefrom.

    • Method and apparatus for synchronously controlling a printing speed of a belt-type printing machine including a plate cylinder, a tension roll for adjusting a distance between the plate cylinder and the tension roll, and an endless printing belt detachably wound around the plate cylinder and the tension roll. According to the present invention, sprocket wheels each having thereround sprocket pins for engaging perforations of the endless printing belt are rotatably mounted on the plate cylinder so that the sprocket wheels have no function of driving the endless printing belt and are only intended to guide the belt along a predetermined path and prevent it from lateral movement relative to the plate cylinder. The endless printing belt is driven only by a frictional force between the peripheral surface of the plate cylinder and the belt. With independently detecting the number of rotation of the sprocket wheels, i.e. the travelling speed of the endless printing belt and the rotational speed of the plate cylinder, i.e. the reference speed of the printing machine, an error between these speeds, if any, is corrected to synchronously equalize these speeds by a differential gear unit to which main drive for driving the plate cylinder and sub-drive for correcting the error are inputted.

The driven helical gear is rotatively coupled to one journal of the plate cylinder but is attached by lateral splines which permit lateral movement of the driven gear with respect to the journal and vice versa. Adjustment means are provided for laterally moving the driven helical gear with respect to the helical drive gear some distance either way from a coplaner relationship, thus changing the phase of the plate cylinder. Lateral adjustment of the plate cylinder is achieved by laterally adjusting the other journal of the plate cylinder during which adjustment the first journal moves laterally with respect to the driven gear due to the lateral spline attachment and does not effect the circumferential adjustment.

An angle coder senses the actual value of the cylinder position which is compared to the set values obtained from the memory to generate a control signal for adjusting a cylinder drive motor. In a preferred embodiment, the memory also stores the direction for rotating the cylinders as well as a number of cylinder movement steps for plate and blanket clamping and unclamping sequences.

By rocking the shaft element (9, 6) out of the normal position, the engagement ( 73) of the third gear with the pitch circle of the first gear is shifted away from the central axis (10) and, further, the engagement point (74) of the third gear with the pitch circle of the second gear (2) is shifted closer to the central axis, thereby causing an angular shift of the second gear with respect to the first gear. The shift is usually only a few degrees and can be controlled, in either direction, by an operating lever (20) which can be positioned manually or by a servo motor, to retain the third gear in the normal position, or shift the third gear out of the normal position for register adjustment.

    • An apparatus and method for measuring the relative circumferential setting of at least two rotating elements of a machine for operating on a moving web are provided wherein a first of the elements serves as a measurement reference. An electric reference pulse is generated for each revolution of the first element, along with a train of clock pulses wherein each count corresponds to an increment of rotation. A marker pulse is generated for each revolution of the second element, and the count pulses generated subsequent to generation of a reference pulse and up to and simultaneous with generation of the next succeeding marker pulse are counted, thereby providing a relative rotational measurement. The count is retained in a memory until the next succeeding count is completed. A mechanism for making circumferential adjustments to the second element is provided, along with generator for generating adjustment pulses for each increment of adjustment, a number corresponding to the number of adjustment pulses being added to or subtracted from the count retained within the memory. The retained number as updated is displayed in an appropriate manner.

    • A dual harmonic gear phasing device forming a part of a web-forming printing tower or other web-handling station is disclosed which allows static or dynamic, 360.degree. infinite phase alterations of web-contacting rollers for coarse and fine tuning of the registration of a multiple-station printing press. The phasing device comprises an enclosed, oil filled structure having a pair of tandem coupled harmonic drive gears respectively connected through gearing or the like to the press drive and to a desired roller for phase changing purposes. Each phasing device also includes a selectively operable stepper motor coupled to one of the harmonic gears for effecting phase alterations. The harmonic gears serve as a 1:1 gear ratio transmission during normal running operations. The phasing device can be used on hard impression or perfecting printing towers, and on other types of web-handling equipment where proper registration is important, such as numbering and punching units.
