The machining station includes a tool spindle which is used to receive a gear cutting tool and a work piece spindle which is used to receive the gear blank (K2). The device also comprises a vertical processing station having a tool holder and a work piece spindle which is used to receive a work piece blank (K1). The machining station mechanically forms a functional unit together with the pre-machining station, wherein the work piece blank (K1) undergoes green machining in the pre-machining station, and is transferred as a gear blank (K2) to the first machining station after the first green machining where it is cut into a gear. The machining station and the pre-machining station are linked together in terms of data and control.

The method includes performing acoustic emission testing while the gear is being ground during a grinding operation. In addition, the method includes collecting swarf from the gear during the grinding operation and inspecting the swarf for an indication of grind burn.

The gear shaping head has a ram that is guided by and reciprocates along a linear guide mounted between a saddle of the gear shaping head and the ram. At least one linear motor reciprocates the ram along a stroke axis relative to the saddle. The ram also carries a rotary drive and a spindle that reciprocate in unison with the ram. The rotary drive directly drives the spindle to journal the spindle through incremental angular positions during gear shaping.

The device includes a base plate and a pressure pad between which the pot-shaped body is receivable. A pilot die is received within a hollow space of a die and is biased in an advancement direction of the die such that a portion of the pilot die protrudes from the hollow space and contacts the base of said pot-shaped body before the die when the die is advanced in the working direction. A groove is thereby created between said curved edge of the pot-shaped body and the pilot die for leading a fine blanking burr or shaving chips into the recess of the pot-shaped body. Further advancement of the die fixing and pressing the burr or the chips into the recess.
