The spark plug satisfies the following condition: W1≧W2×1.55−(W3+0.25) where W1 (mm) is a width of the metal shell at a weld region of the metal shell joined with the base end portion in a specific direction that extends perpendicular to the axis direction through a center line of the ground electrode; W2 (mm) is a thickness of the ground electrode at the specific position in the specific direction; and W3 (mm) is a thickness of the surface layer at the specific position in the specific direction.

    • A plug boot contains an ignition cable which is fitted with the stud terminal of a spark plug extending from an engine cylinder block. This plug boot is covered with a heat shield, and further with an auxiliary heat shield. The cylinder-side end portion of the auxiliary heat shield is fixed between the spark plug and the cylinder block. The cable-side end portion of the auxiliary heat shield is provided with a lid unit. This lid unit includes a fixing retaining member and a pressing portion. The fixing retaining member fits the lid unit to the auxiliary heat shield, while the pressing portion exerts downward forces on the plug boot. By the combination of fitting forces and downward forces, the ignition cable and the spark plug are reliably connected.

Heat transfer or transmission control is effected by introducing between metallic components of the combination and the glass rod a heat conductive mass (2) which fills the space between the glass rod and the metallic components over a predetermined length, in accordance with desired heat transfer characteristics.
