    • The invention provides a mixing device which defines a mixing chamber having two inlets leading into the mixing chamber at angularly spaced positions. The device further includes an outlet leading from the mixing chamber. The mixing chamber is typically generally spherical in shape with the outlet being positioned diametrically opposite one of the inlets. The invention further provides a nuclear power plant having a core conditioning system including a pair of heat exchangers, namely a recuperator and a water cooled heat exchanger. The recuperator has a hot side and a cold side and the plant includes a mixing device positioned upstream of the inlet on the hot side of the recuperator to permit the temperature of gas being fed to the recuperator to be restricted to a predetermined maximum by mixing hot and cold gas in the mixing device prior to feeding the mixture into the hot side of the recuperator.

    • A system of extracting fluid samples, either liquid or gas, from the interior of a nuclear reactor containment utilizes a jet pump. To extract the sample fluid, a nonradioactive motive fluid is forced through the inlet and discharge ports of a jet pump located outside the containment, creating a suction that draws the sample fluid from the containment through a sample conduit connected to the pump suction port. The mixture of motive fluid and sample fluid is discharged through a return conduit to the interior of the containment. The jet pump and means for removing a portion of the sample fluid from the sample conduit can be located in a shielded sample grab station located next to the containment. A non-nuclear grade active pump can be located outside the grab sampling station and the containment to pump the nonradioactive motive fluid through the jet pump.

    • An improved gas circulator for a gas-cooled nuclear reactor system is disclosed which includes a stator, a rotor having a rotor shaft, and an impeller attached to one end thereof. A radial active magnetic bearing and a radial backup bearing are positioned proximate each end of the rotor shaft. An axial active magnetic bearing is also located between the ends of the rotor shaft, as is an axial backup bearing, with two of the backup bearings enclosed within a sealed chamber that may contain a lubricant, for example, a solid lubricant or a liquid lubricant. Preferably, the gas circulator is installed in a nuclear reactor system with the rotor shaft in a substantially vertical orientation and the sealed chamber near the bottom of the rotor shaft. The lower radical backup bearing and the axial backup bearing are advantageously located within the sealed chamber. The lower radial backup bearing and the axial backup bearing may be spaced apart sufficiently to permit the lower radial backup bearing to provide substantially all radial support for the rotor when the radial active magnetic bearings are deenergized.

    • A power plant having a closed gas-cooling circuit for the production of process heat to be transferred to a secondary circuit, comprising: (a) a vessel comprising a generally solid block of material; (b) a high-temperature reactor positioned within the vessel; (c) a plurality of heat exchanger units positioned about said reactor in the reactor in the vessel, the heat exchanger units comprising each a high temperature heat exchanger and a low temperature heat exchanger coupled serially therewith, each of the heat exchanger units being removably mounted in a vertically oriented shaft in the material; (d) first means for conducting a portion of a hot gas stream leaving the reactor to each of the high temperature heat exchangers where the hot gas is partially cooled by indirect contact with a working fluid in the secondary circuit; (e) second means for conducting said cooled gas from each of the high temperature heat exchangers to said low temperature heat exchangers coupled therewith where the gas is further cooled by indirect contact with the secondary circuit fluid; and means for returning said further cooled gas to the reactor from each of the low temperature heat exchangers by circulating the gas around the periphery of each respective heat exchanger unit.
