    • A digital temperature control system for controlling the temperature of a space, including a thermal sensing element for supplying an analog signal proportional to temperature, an analog-to-digital converter for converting analog signals supplied by said thermal sensing element into digital signals, a plurality of switches for setting a desired temperature setting, a bit pattern-to-digital converter for converting the switch combinations into sets of digital signals, and arithmetically subtracting one least significant bit from the digital number represented by the sets of digital signals, and a digital comparator for comparing the outputs from the analog-to-digital converter with the outputs from the bit pattern-to-digital converter and for transmitting a control signal only in case the digital output from the analog-to-digital converter is greater than the digital output from the bit pattern-to-digital converter, wherein the bit pattern-to-digital converter functions as a subtractor in response to the control signal from the digital comparator, and transmits a subtracted digital signal to the digital comparator.

    • Redundant but independently operable data processors called encoders are arranged so that control of a particular recorder gathering billing data in a telephone switching system can be transferred while maintaining billing continuity for calls being handled by that recorder. More specifically, each encoder checks the validity of billing information received from each recorder. However, each encoder only transmits billing data pertaining to a designated group of recorders to a remote processor. When an encoder detects that it is not receiving valid data from one of its designated recorders, the control of only that designated recorder is transferred to the other encoder if the other encoder indicates that it is receiving valid data from that recorder. Moreover, the relinquishing encoder sends a message to the remote processor indicating that it is giving up control of the designated recorder, while the accepting encoder inhibits the transmission of information to the remote processor for a predetermined time interval and then transmits a message indicating that it has accepted control of the designated recorder. This delay ensures that the remote processor will receive the relinquish message before the acceptance message so that the continuity of processing billing data for calls handled by the designated recorder can be maintained.

    • A control system for controlling a condition, such as temperature, to maintain that condition in a generally enclosed space near a selected condition value. The system has a condition responsive impedance in series with a selectable impedance across a regulated voltage source to provide a voltage divider network, the output of which reflects the instantaneous condition of the environmental space relative to a selected condition therefor. This output is supplied to a Schmitt trigger circuit having hysteresis characteristics sufficient to provide a stable operating mode for the control system, and the Schmitt trigger circuit output controls a means for changing the condition of the enclosed space. A manual mode selecting switch may be provided for inserting any of several different impedances in the series combination, and a timer may be provided to automatically switch between different impedances in the series combination as determined by elapsed time with respect to application of power to the circuit.
