摘要： A paper coating composition has therein an optical brightening agent (OBA) and a water-soluble non-ionic polysaccharide derivative, exhibiting a solution viscosity in water of less than 1500 cps when dissolved at 5% polymer concentration, wherein the paper coating provides improved optical brightness as compared to the same formulation without said non-ionic, polysaccharide derivative. A paper coated with this composition has an optical brightness value of greater than 70.

摘要： A process is provided for preparing an acrylic copolymer latex having improved mechanical and shear stability comprising emulsion polymerizing at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer having up to 23 carbons in the presence of, by weight based on the total monomer content, a) from about 0.05% to about 5.0% of a protective colloid with a molecular weight of less than 75,000, and b) from about 0.01% to about 1.5% of at least one water soluble free radical polymerization initiator. This latex provides coating manufacturers the flexibility of either eliminating surfactants altogether from coating or to use small amounts thereof.

摘要： This invention provides a process for preparing a stable aqueous emulsion composition which has excellent properties for application as a wet abrasion-resistant paper coating binder. The dispersed copolymer of the aqueous emulsion composition comprises a major proportion of vinyl acetate and a minor proportion of an amino-containing vinyl monomer. An important aspect of the emulsion preparation method is the addition of an aqueous solution of the amino-containing vinyl monomer as a separate feedstream, wherein the amine group in the said vinyl monomer is in the form of an amine-acid salt.

摘要： Paper coating or adhesive compositions comprise 100 parts by weight of pigment, 1 to 15 parts by weight of water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol and 0.1 to 4 parts by weight of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, methylcellulose, sodium polyacrylate or sodium alginate or a water-soluble modifier. The pigment may be kaolin, calcium carbonate or titanium dioxide. The polyvinyl alcohol may be a partially or completely hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate. The compositions may be dissolved and dispersed in water and used for coating and laminating paper. They may also comprise wax emulsions; tinting pigments and dyes; plasticizers, e.g. calcium and ammonium stearates; dispersing agents, e.g. tetrasodium pyrophosphate and sodium hexametaphosphate; insolubilizers for the polyvinyl alcohol, e.g. triazone resins; and catalysts for the insolubilization, e.g. ammonium chloride.ALSO:Paper may be coated with compositions comprising 100 parts by weight of pigment, 1-15 parts by weight of water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol and 0,1-4 parts by weight of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate or sodium alginate. The pigment may be kaolin, calcium carbonate or titanium dioxide. The compositions may be applied from aqueous media and may also comprise wax emulsions; tinting pigments and dyes; plasticizers, e.g. calcium and ammonium stearates; dispersing agents, e.g. tetrasodium pyrophosphate and sodium hexametaphosphate; insolubilizers for the polyvinyl alcohol, e.g. triazone resins; and catalysts for the insolubilization, e.g. ammonium chloride. In examples, paper is coated with aqueous compositions comprising clay, polyvinyl alcohol, and (1-4) sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, (6) hydroxyethyl cellulose, (7) methyl cellulose, (8) sodium polyacrylate, and (9) sodium alginate; and comprising polyvinyl alcohol, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and (11) titanium dioxide, and (13) calcium carbonate.
