    • Capture-fixation of SO.sub.2 from flue and non-ferrous smelter gases is achieved with the use of MgO aqueous slurry as an absorbing medium. During the absorption, most of the MgO is converted to MgSO.sub.4 and the rest is solubilized as MgSO.sub.3 and Mg(HSO.sub.3).sub.2. The clear solution obtained at the end of the absorption is brought to about 40.degree. C. and is treated with sulphuric acid in an amount representing at least 5% in excess of the stoichiometric requirement whereby sulphite and bisulphite of magnesium are converted to magnesium sulphate. The magnesium sulphate obtained above can be used in a two stage addition of potassium chloride to obtain magnesium chloride, and calcined dolomite added to the remainder whereby magnesium hydroxide is precipitated and may be filtered off from the resulting CaCl.sub.2 solution. The process provides a means of removing SO.sub.2 from flue and smelter gases and at the same time produces industrially important chemical products (SO.sub.2, H.sub.2 SO.sub.4, K.sub.2 SO.sub.4, MgO, CaCl.sub.2).

    • A process to produce sulphur from two acid gases both containing hydrogen sulphide and one of which contains ammonia, using a modified Claus technique.The acid gas containing ammonia is burnt in the presence of air under substoichiometric conditions in a first heat-reaction chamber, while the ammonia-free acid gas is burnt in a second heat-reaction chamber, forming a series with the first chamber, with the right quantity of air to provide a molar ratio of H.sub.2 S to SO.sub.2 of approximately 2/1 at the catalytic reaction stage inlet. The mixed effluents from both heat-reaction chambers may pass through a high-temperature residence chamber before being conveyed to the heat-recovery stage.Gas effluents from the heat-reaction stage contain H.sub.2 S and SO.sub.2 in the right ratio for the catalytic reaction stage, and no hydrocarbons or harmful quantities of NH.sub.3 and NO.

    • Sulfur compounds contained in gases containing oxygen and a high content of water vapor are exploited by removing the water vapor content by treating the gases with a glycol and then using the dried gas still containing sulfur compounds, as an oxidation gas for the burning of sulfur or for the roasting of sulfidic ores in the production of highly concentrated sulfuric acid. Apparatus for carrying out the process includes an absorber for absorption by the glycol of the water vapor contained in the gas. The absorber has an exhaust gas conduit connected to a combustion furnace or roasting furnace for the production of sulfur dioxide. A desorber is provided for distilling the water vapor from the glycol and is connected to the absorber by a ring conduit for the glycol enriched with water and for the dewatered glycol. Lastly, apparatus is provided for the heating of the glycol and the desorber.
