    • Transportation apparatus for transporting persons between spaced landings, including a conveyor mounted on a support structure, and a balustrade formed of a plurality of panels aligned in end-to-end relation. An endless handrail is guided over the top edge of the balustrade via a handrail guide member which extends to and partially defines newel sections at opposite ends of the transportation apparatus. Support channels extend from newel to newel to support the lower edge of the balustrade. Structural members complete the newels, extending from the opposite ends of the support channel to the ends of the handrail guide member. The structural members are tapered to provide a stepless transition from the handrail guide members, which are relatively thin, to the larger dimension of the support channel. Support for the structural members, which are cantilevered outwardly from the support structure, is provided by a splice-clamp arrangement which provides excellent support and lateral stability.

    • A passenger conveyor system in which the terminal ends of an endless conveyor are hinged for swinging movement of the ends upward. The major mechanical components which are located in pits at the ends of the conveyor are mounted on the underside of hinged structural members. The balustrades, landing plates and comb plates are mounted on the tops of the structural members. Clearance for lifting of the end assemblies is obtained by removing panels from the balustrades. In the up position of the terminal ends, the major mechanical components are lifted out of the pits and are accessible for service, repair, removal or replacement. The end assemblies are transportable into position for installation by using the pulleys mounted on the underside of the central structural members as supporting wheels. Mounting of the major mechanical components such as the driving pulley and belt take-up pulleys at the ends of the endless conveyor spaced from the comb plates makes possible improved control and driving of a belt conveyor without the necessity of a reverse bend in the belt path. The same drive is used for the handrail providing synchronization of the handrail and belt. An inclined handrail path at the ends provides an increased wraparound of the handrails over the driving pulley with a decreased wraparound at the balustrade newels.

    • An arcuate escalator system having a readily fabricated and reliable construction is provided that also had advantageous esthetic aspects. In a specific example, the escalator is of helical configuration, arranged around a central axis. Tapered step segments meeting all established safety standards for size, configuration and entry and exit paths are advanced along the helical path in the desired direction. In the return path, the step segments turn through small radii of curvature into and out of an intermediate substantially linear portion, for which purpose they may be tilted and partially nested relative to each other. The principal return path is the linear portion of the path, in this example, and passes through a center column around which the helical structure is arranged. The drive mechanism comprises a guided chain drive having both lateral and vertical freedom of movement, and coupled to the step elements by pivotally connected step links. Guide means for the step elements and the chain drive system control the inclination and curvature of the path. Radial forces generated during movement of the system are absorbed by a roller guide system along the chain drive.

    • The guiding apparatus comprises substantially rectangular rail holders and L-shaped rail holders. Main and follower travel rails or tracks are supported by such rail holders and there are provided side plates at which there are mounted the rail holders, the side plates being supported upon a carrier frame. These rail holders are provided at their attachment or fastening side with at least two respective centering protuberances or nubs or the like which engage into corresponding centering openings provided in the side plates to which the rail holders are fastened. The rail holders possess, at their rail contact side, a dovetail clamping device which, in cooperation with a dovetail profile or section extending along the underside of the travel rail or track, to reliably and easily releasably holds the travel rails and the rail holders by virtue of a clamping action which is exerted at all sides of the dovetail profile. The side plates, and, in particular, the position of their centering openings are produced true or exact to size and with narrow tolerances so that in cooperation with the related centering protuberances and the rigid dovetail clamping there is automatically ensured parallelism and alignment of the travel rails or tracks required for a quiet escalator or stair running. The guiding apparatus can be assembled without the need to resort to assembly fixtures or jigs and without subsequent adjustment from individual mass-produced parts.
