    • An apparatus for forming partial stacks by separation of a stack of printed sheets standing one behind the other includes an approximately horizontal stack guide having a feed end for receiving printed sheets fed in a direction perpendicular to the stack guide from a feeding apparatus and stacking the printed sheets on edge to form a stack in a horizontal direction. A separating device is arranged along the horizontal stack guide for forming the partial stacks. The separating device includes a guide arrangement disposed parallel to the horizontal direction of stack forming. First and second components of the separating device are seated one behind the other on the guide arrangement and are displaceable along the guide arrangement. The first and second components are jointly displaceable to the feed end of the stack guide and are controllable to be separable from one another in a stack separating position. Spreading elements are pivotally connected to the first and second components of the separating device. The spreading elements are displaceable jointly with the first and second components to the feed end of the stack guide. Support elements each associated with a respective one of the first and second components of the separating device are driven into the stack of printed sheets between the spreading elements for separating the spreading elements from one other between two printed sheets thereby keeping the two printed sheets apart from one another and forming the partial stacks of printed sheets.

    • A mail piece stacking machine is disclosed which is designed for use on conjunction with a mail piece processing or handling machine, such as a typical mailing machine, for stacking a plurality of pieces of mail as they are ejected seriatim from an outlet end of the processing or handling machine. The stacking machine has an elongate frame with a first feeding device consisting of a pair of cooperating rollers disposed adjacent the inlet end of the stacking machine, receives the mail pieces seriatim from the processing or handling machine and positively feeds the mail pieces into the stacking machine. A second elongate feeding device, consisting of a pair of belts traveling at a much slower speed than the first feeding device, receives the mail pieces in shingled overlapped relationship, and transports them to an upwardly angled stacking wall which causes the mail pieces to form a stack of mail pieces in the same upwardly angled orientation which progresses from the stacking wall toward the first feeding device.

    • A power stacker provides for receiving lengthwise orientated envelopes projected longitudinally onto the power stacker at a receiving end of the power stacker from an envelope feed device. The power stacker has a base supporting both an elongated deck and registration wall, an envelope transport system for transporting envelopes along the deck from the receiving end to a stack end of the deck. The transport system includes a plurality of friction belts extending partly along the deck and a power stack wheel pivotally mounted to the registration wall. An upper deflection flap at having one end pivotally mounted to the registration wall at the receiving end of the deck at a vertical elevation above that of the longitudinal feed level of the feed device, the upper deflection flap to contact the deck at it other end at a predetermined nominal angle forward of the power stack wheel. A deflector ramp is fixably mounted to a lateral positioning member, the deflector ramp being horizontally elongated and set at a fixed inclining horizontal angle nominally set at 20 degree. The lateral positioning member is adjustably mounted to the deck and the deflector fixably mounted thereto for selectively positioning the deflector ramp laterally with respect to the registration wall. A deflector bench is fixably mounted to the registration wall at the receiving end of the deck at a vertical elevation just below the longitudinal feed level of the feed device for preventing opening of the envelope.

    • An apparatus and method for stacking a plurality of flat articles on edge, comprising a discharge magazine for sequentially receiving and stacking the flat articles in a stack, the discharge magazine including moveable discharge support belts adapted to support the stack of articles on edge and a moveable compression plate to maintain the articles on edge. A drive element is provided for controllably moving the discharge support belts. A stacker section adjacent the discharge magazine transports articles sequentially into the stack, the stacker section comprising stacker belts extending around a plurality of rollers. The last of the articles in the stack abuts against the stacker belts adjacent one of the rollers to apply a compressive force developed by the stack of flat articles and the compression plate to the one roller. The one roller is movably mounted to the apparatus for movement responsive to increases and decreases in the compressive force. A deflection plate is positioned proximate the one moveable roller to deflect leaning sides of the articles from inadvertently applying pressure to the moveable roller. An actuator element is operatively connected to and responsive to movement of the one roller and connected to the drive element for activating the drive belts and the discharge support belts to transport the stack of flat articles away from the stacker section when the compressive force reaches a predetermined maximum value.

    • The method and the device serves for the production of defined stacks of folded or unfolded sheets. The individually supplied sheets are placed on edge onto a horizontal table whereby the separation of the individual stacks is achieved by a separating support that is advanced parallel to the table at the stack forming velocity. In order to be able to separate and individualize product stacks of differently sized sheets without the need for structural adaptation of the device, the formation of a first separating plane defining the beginning of the stack as well as the formation of a second separating plane defining the end of the stack is achieved by a separating support that is insertable between the sheets in a direction transverse to the longitudinal extension of the table. Further supports are completely insertable into the thus formed separating planes. Optionally, a transferring support can be used intermediately which takes over the separating plane from the separating support and transfers the separating plane to the two further supports.
