    • A vibratory bowl defines a number of predetermined attachment locations in one side thereof adjacent to a parts discharge port defined by the bowl. One or more support plates are detachably mounted to the bowl side in a vertical position via the number of predetermined attachment locations, and each of the one or more support plates defines a horizontal support edge having a parts receiving unit detachably mounted thereto. The parts receiving unit is supported by the one or more support plates and has one end thereof positioned adjacent to the parts discharge port of the bowl and an opposite end extending away from the discharge port. The parts receiving unit may be configured to orient parts supplied by the vibratory bowl according to a desired orientation. A parts confining member is detachably mounted to one of the one or more support plates and is operable to confine parts within the parts receiving unit. The bowl may have a counterweight structure attached to, or contained within, a side of the bowl adjacent to the parts receiving unit, and may further have a portion of an inner surface thereof extending into a helical parts path defined within the vibratory bowl.

    • A work station module which includes a buffer storage area (B) for the transitory storage of workpiece carriers (A) which are received at non-specific intervals and an escapement station (C) to facilitate performance of some operation of a workpiece carried by each carrier. The buffer storage area includes a conveying surface (30) which is defined by a multiplicity of fibers (36) and which is vibrated to move the carriers longitudinally therealong. The resiliency of the fibers permits carriers which are adjacent the escapement station to remain stationary even though the conveying surface is vibrating. A directing rail (50) extends upward through the fibers and terminates just below their upper surface such that the carriers are supported on the fibers and not the directing rail. The carrier includes a plurality of pins (18, 20) which extend downward therefrom to define a slot for receiving the rail. At the escapement station, the carriers are decelerated by engagement with a friction drag surface (62) and are brought into general alignment with the escapement station by a stop surface (60). The carriers are lifted by arms (72) and brought into more accurate alignment with the escapement station by the interaction of pins (70) on the arms and bushings (24) in the carriers. A precision alignment pin (90) and an associated bushing (26) bring the carrier and escapement station into accurate alignment to facilitate performance of an automatic operation on the workpiece carried thereon.

    • A container counter for counting elongated objects such as empty beverage cans including a hopper for receiving objects to be counted, a plurality of chutes located below and communicating with the hopper for conveying objects out of the hopper, and an oscillating grid positioned above the chutes to assist objects in becoming properly oriented to pass out of the hopper and into the chutes. A sensing device is mounted on each chute to detect a passing object and emit a signal. A summer is connected to the sensing devices to sum the signals and display a total count.

    • A vibratory outfeed conveyor has a base, a feed strip resiliently mounted on the base, and a vibrator connected to the feed strip for feeding objects. A mounting bracket extends downward generally perpendicularly from the base, and an upper region of the mounting bracket is secured to a vertical surface of a support element so that the base extends horizontally over the upper surface of the support element. Spacers support the base above the upper surface of the support element so that a midregion of the base between the spacers is bendable downward. Screws engage the vertical surface and the lower region of the mounting bracket for moving the lower region of the mounting bracket away from the vertical surface while the upper region of the mounting bracket is secured to the vertical surface to apply leverage force to the base bending the midregion of the base toward the upper surface and pressing the free end of the base downward to hold the free end securely in place. Such an arrangement securely fixes the base in place without requiring fasteners or hold-down means arranged at the free end of the base.

    • The apparatus has a downwardly inclined guide ramp which diverges in its width in downward direction and is provided on its upper surface with parallel guide channels. An upper end of the ramp receives a stream of identical objects which are located in random orientation and in overlapping relationship in the stream. The lower end of each guide channel discharges into a pair of sorting channels and a routing arrangement is provided upstream of these sorting channels to assure that objects having a desired orientation enter only one of the sorting channels whereas objects having an undesired orientation enter only the other sorting channel where they encounter a reversing arrangement which reverses their position until they, also, assume the desired orientation.
