    • A roller comprises a straight support member, a plurality of hollow cylindrical roller members arranged axially thereof and having the support member inserted therethrough, and a position change-over device provided for each of the roller members. Each roller member is provided around the support member so as to be rotatable relative to the support member and movable relative thereto in a plane orthogonal to the axial direction, and the change-over devices are adapted to shift the roller members respectively each in the plane orthogonal to the axial direction of the roller member. A connecting member is interposed between opposed end faces of each two adjacent roller members for preventing the two adjacent roller members from moving circumferentially thereof relative to each other while permitting relative movement of the two adjacent roller members in the plane orthogonal to the axial direction.

    • An apparatus for preparing a medium for use in a printing process supports the medium (2) for rotation about an axis. A head (6) is mounted for movement parallel to the axis and includes means to direct a laser beam onto the surface of the medium. The laser beam engraves or exposes the series of cell sites (c) around the medium and an acousto-optic modulator (12) positioned in the path of the laser beam deflects the beam substantially in the direction of rotation of the medium (2). In a preferred example the beam tracks the surface of the medium at a speed matched to that of the medium so as to keep the beam stationary on the cell site while that site is being engraved or exposed. The beam may also be deflected to skip backwards or forwards over immediately adjacent cell sites.

    • To facilitate the manufacture of an anilox roller for an inker of an offset rotary printing machine, a cylindrical core has a layer of ink accepting material, for example copper, applied thereon. To form wear-resistant ribs (8) between which ink receptor depressions or cells (19) can be formed, the layer (3) of ink accepting material is formed with grooves into which a hard, wear-resistant material is applied, completely filling the grooves. The ink receptor depressions or cells are then formed in the ink accepting material, which is softer than said wear-resistant material. The thickness of the ink accepting layer (3) originally applied is greater than the depth of the cells which, typically, have a depth of about 0.02 mm.

    • To permit use of a yielding surface covering (16) on an ink application cylinder (7, 12, 32) offset printing machine, without slippage or rubbing between the ink application cylinder and an adjacent plate cylinder (5, 31), a drive is arranged between the plate cylinder and the ink application cylinder which provides for corresponding linear circumferential speed by changing the profile of engaged drive gears (6, 13) driving the ink application cylinder and the plate cylinder; the drive gears have the same pitch circle diameter. The yielding surface (16) on the ink application cylinder has a thickness of between 2-3% of the diameter of the ink application cylinder (12) and a durometer value of between about 60-70 on the Shore A scale; the ink application cylinder (12) has a diameter of about 99% of the diameter of the plate cylinder and in operation is engaged against the plate cylinder over an engagement zone of about 7-9 mm in circumferential length (1).
