    • A router bit for laterally cutting through sheets of wood product, such as plywood and the like. The bit includes a shank portion adapted to be gripped in the chuck of a router, a fluted portion, and a tip. The fluted portion has two helical left-hand flutes. Each flute has a cutting edge and a web portion having a convex surface that extends rearwardly and immediately inwardly from the cutting edge, without a land, in a continuous curve. The flutes are formed by parabolic grinding. In one embodiment the tip is conical in shape and has two diametrically opposed tip flutes for cutting axially into a workpiece. In another embodiment the tip is flat and the bit is adapted only to cut laterally through the workpiece.

    • A porous seal element usable as a blade tip seal in a turbomachine or as an element of a labyrinth seal is made up of a large number of strips disposed edgewise to the sealing face of the element and extending in the direction of relative movement of the seal elements. The strips have grooves extending across the strip for discharge of a cooling fluid such as air. The presence of the grooves provides a low density structure at the seal face of the seal element which may be abraded if there is rubbing contact and provides for metering of coolant at the rear face of the seal element. The seal element is fabricated by etching sheets so each sheet defines a number of parallel strips joined by weak ties and with the grooves extending across the strips; stacking the sheets and bonding them together; and then separating the bonded structure at the weak ties so that each stack of strips defines a seal element.

    • A tool holder has a shank which is mounted in a nonrotatable support which is longitudinally movable toward and from the work. The opposite end of the tool holder has a spindle mounted therein for rotation and provided with a central aperture in which the shank of a broach is secured. The axis of the broach is offset one degree from the axis of the holder which produces a wobble effect to the corners of the broach seriatim to produce rapid cutting of a hole to a predetermined shape. Such shape is of polygonal regular or irregular form developed by the broach. The work piece is rotated and the broach is advanced into engagement with the end face thereof and continually advanced until the broaching operation is completed.
