    • The electronic HID ballast includes a Pulse-Phase-Modulation (PPM) pulse source, a switch driver, a power switching circuit, a coupling circuit, a DC starter, a switch current amplitude feedback circuit and a switch current pulse width feedback circuit. The PPM pulse source works at PPM mode with a fixed frequency to prevent acoustic arc resonance, and uses pulse deduction method to protect the ballast from overload during the starting period. The PPM pulse source, the switch driver, the switch current amplitude feedback circuit and the power switching circuit work together, functioning as a constant power switching source to energize lamp through the coupling circuit. The power switching circuit and the lamp are in DC series connection for the open load protection. The coupling circuit uses parallel LRC loop to improve power coupling efficiency between the lamp and the power switching circuit. The DC starter works at the low igniting frequency to offer open circuit protection for the starter itself.

    • A power supply and/or ballast optimizes performance of an electrical load, such as a High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamp by monitoring the current and voltage signal driving the load, and calculating a representative portion of the power spectrum being delivered to the load. The calculated portion of the delivered power spectrum is compared to a desired power spectrum, and the input signal to the load is modified in such a manner that the delivered power spectrum will more closely match the desired power spectrum. The input current and voltage, and the frequency at the load are thus not controlled directly, but are an indirect result of applying the modified input power spectrum to the load. By utilizing the input power spectrum in this manner, a power supply and/or ballast provides improved control and performance when used with electrical loads such as HID lamps.

The lamp contains a fill of a mixture of cesium, mercury and a rare gas.     • Methods of operating a discharge lamp by amplitude-modulating and pulsing the lamp input power waveform. The techniques control both the arc stabilization and color characteristics of the lamp, respectively. The alternating current (AC) input waveform is amplitude-modulated to stabilize the arc with a swept AC periodic wave (such as a sine wave, sawtooth wave, square wave, etc., or a combination thereof). The swept wave can be generally swept from about 20 kHz to 60 kHz, with a preferable band sweep of from approximately 40 kHz to 50 kHz. The sweep can also be patterned (such as allowing the sweep to have stepped rises and falls within the sweep cycle). The sweep may also contain multiple-frequency sweeps that are bundled together to modulate the carrier wave. These modulation forms are used to center, constrict and stabilize the arc. In addition to this stabilization, the lamp input waveform is pulsed to control and regulate the color characteristics of the lamp.

    • A power supply for an ac discharge lamp utilizes a switching transistor for turning on and off the dc current from a dc power circuit. The dc current is then fed to a low pass filter for supplying the dc power to the lamp with alternating polarity. A voltage and a current sensing circuits effective to control the dc power to a substantially constant level is connected to a control circuit for controlling the on and off times of the switching transistor. In such a power supply, the voltage and current sensing circuits are made up of transformers whereby the high-voltage circuit section is effectively separated and insulated from the low-voltage circuit section so as to prevent any possible electrical shocks.
