    • A method of making a quartz-shell drum includes the steps of heating a quartz tube to a temperature at least sufficient to enable quartz to flow. A diameter of a portion of the heated quartz tube is enlarged to a predetermined size. The enlarged tube is cut perpendicular to a longitudinal axis to create a shell having a desired height. A top edge and a bottom edge of the shell are ground to form smooth radii. The top and the bottom edges are fused to create top and bottom rounded edges. In an alternate embodiment, the top edge is instead formed to be inwardly angled. Finally, a top and a bottom head are affixed to the top and the bottom edges, respectively, to form a drum.

    • A vent for a drum or drum head is provided. The vent includes a valve which is mounted on the side of the drum or drum head which can be adjusted between fully open and fully closed positions and may provide a range of settings between those two positions. A number of embodiments of adjustable throttle valve types that are applicable including but not limited to: globe valve, gate valve, ball valve, plug valve butterfly valve, diaphragm valve, check valve, one, two or three way valves, pinch valve, flap valve, needle valve or safety valve.

    • A tunable drum is shown having a hollow drum shell, and imperforate drumheads closing the ends of said drum shell. One or more opening extend through the drum shell for acoustic venting, and valves are provided for adjusting the size of the openings to vary the amount of acoustic venting, and consequently the volume, pitch, tone, timbre and stick response of said drum. The valves may be slide valves movable, e.g., slidable or pivotable, between an open and a closed position. A preferred valve consists of a ring member positioned for rotation inside said drum and slidable endwise of the drum to cover or uncover said drum openings, or the ring member may have openings that match the drum openings and operable to cover or uncover the openings or rotation. A handle for rotation of the ring member extends outside the shell for movement by the drummer.

    • A transitionally reinforced drum shell for an acoustical drum of the type having drumhead tensioning hardware is disclosed herein. The invention comprises a staged bridge reinforcement structure incorporated on the inside of the shell, which provides structural support for the drumhead tensioning hardware while enhancing the tonal quality of the instrument. The transitions may be accomplished with abrupt steps or smooth tapers between thickness regions. Also disclosed are a non-integrated staged bridge reinforcement structure, which can be retrofitted to existing drum shells, and a method of reinforcing axial regions of a drum shell with such a staged bridge reinforcement structure.

    • A multi-annular musical drum instrument formed from a plurality of axially aligned permanently connected rings. Each ring formed of a multi-annular ring of laminated plywood, a solid wood or other desireable material. Each ring is non-jointed and undivided in the circumferential direction so as to be formed of a single piece rather than a composite of sections so as to provide uniform vibratory characteristics. One or more of the rings functons as a sounding ring having a greater outer radius than the other shell rings. Such sounding rings receive a connection to a respective drum head. Two rings form outer rings of the cylindrical shell contacting the respective drum heads. Either or both of the two may be rounded to decrease the overtones of the drum head, pointed to increase the overtones of the drum head, or flat so as not to alter the overtones of the drum head. The simplified construction provides a drum having a natural sound without rattling noises or a tin sound elsewhere caused by moving parts and extraneous brackets.
