    • A microfilm searching and reading device for selecting a microfilm cartridge containing a target image from multiple microfilm cartridges and for reading the target image to produce image signals. The device is composed of a storage rack and a scanner including an image reader and a driving unit for winding and rewinding the microfilm roll contained in the selected microfilm cartridge. According to one aspect of the invention, the scanner is moved along the vertical direction to a position aligned with the selected cartridge and then the selected cartridge is ejected from the rack to be received by the scanner. According to another aspect of the invention, the scanner is moved into the rack to receive the selected cartridge to read the target image and then retracted from the rack. According to a further aspect of the invention, the scanner includes a driving unit which has a drive shaft removably engaging with the driven shaft of the selected cartridge. The drive shaft of the scanner may be replaced by a drive roller which is to be engaged with a driven disk operatively associated with the reel of each microfilm cartridge or each support plate of the storage rack. The device further is composed of a memory mechanism for storing the positional data of respective microfilm cartridges, and a control mechanism for controlling the movement and operation of the scanner. The access time can be markedly reduced and changes in system scale can be readily accommodated.

    • An x-ray microfilm reader includes a microcomputer control system for controlling film loading, unloading and searching for a particular frame, as well as controlling exposure times for full-size reproductions ("blow backs") of the x-ray images. The x-ray microfilm is contained in a cartridge which is inserted into a cartridge station of the microfilm reader. When the user depresses an INDEX key, the control system automatically causes the microfilm to be withdrawn from the cartridge and wound onto a takeup reel until the first frame is aligned at a film gate. By entering a numerical value through a keyboard and then actuating a SEARCH switch, the user causes the control system to automatically drive the film until the selected frame is aligned at the film gate. The control system controls operating speeds of the drive motor as a function of the distance between the current frame and the desired frame, so that the microfilm is stopped at the proper frame without undershoot or overshoot. Once the desired frame has been located, the user can insert an x-ray plate or cartridge in a track behind the projection screen. A file monitor switch indicates the presence of the x-ray plate in the track, and the control system disables the film drive and turns off the projection lamp. The user then enters, through numerical keys, a desired exposure time and actuates an EXPOSE switch, which causes the photosensitive film in the x-ray cassette to be exposed to the image from the frame.

    • Asynchronous high-speed film transport apparatus wherein supply and take-up reels have opposite ends of an elongated film wound thereupon. A pair of drive motors one for each reel is selectively operable to rotate the reels respectively to move film along a path from one reel to the other. First and second film vacuum chambers are associated respectively with the supply and take-up reels, each chamber being arranged to hold a loop of film, the chambers being positioned adjacent the film path between the reels. Means are connected to the drive motors for producing movement of the film and sensing means are provided for maintaining a predetermined loop of film in each of the chambers during film movement. Between the first vacuum chamber and a read/record station is a first clamp for the film and a storage device for controlling the film advance, the storage device including a movable member for controlling the length of a frame. A second film clamp is positioned opposite the read/record station. Before frame advance, the second film clamp is closed and the first clamp is opened. Film is then pulled from the film loop formed in the supply reel vacuum chamber by applying air pressure and/or vacuum to the film in the storage device. At the same time, the movable member in the storage device, or film advance cavity, is positioned to provide the desired film advance distance. During film advance, the first clamp is closed and the second clamp is opened. Film is then pulled from the film advance cavity into the take-up free film loop by vacuum in the take-up film loop cavity and/or applied pressure.
