    • A compound water meter includes a housing having opposite inlet and outlet ends, a water guidance channel extending between the inlet and outlet ends and defining a direction of flow therebetween and upper opening disposed above and in communication with the water guidance channel, a main meter measuring inset disposed in the housing across the water guidance channel, a switch-over valve inset disposed in the housing across the water guidance channel and connected watertight with the main meter measuring inset, and an impeller rotatably supported directly by and between the respective insets such that the main meter measuring inset is disposed upstream and the switch-over valve inset downstream of the rotatable impeller relative to the direction of flow. Both insets form an inset unit and with the impeller are suspended in the housing by a cover which closes the upper opening of the housing. The main meter measuring inset has a hub rotatably supporting the impeller. The compound water meter also includes an electronic scanning device for registering the rotational speed of the impeller which is disposed within the hub and an electronic counter disposed on the housing cover which is connected via leads with the electronic scanning device.

    • A gas turbine meter includes a measuring cartridge which has a measuring rotor that rotates in one direction at a speed approximately proportional to the velocity of gas flowing through the meter and a reference rotor mounted downstream of the measuring rotor which rotates in the opposite direction from the measuring rotor. An inlet flow straightener upstream of the measuring rotor causes gas to flow substantially axially within the meter, and a reference flow straightener mounted between the measuring rotor and the reference rotor also causes gas to flow substantially axially within the meter. The inlet flow straightener and the reference flow straightener are constructed so that a measurement of the accuracy of the meter can be conducted without measuring differences in pressure and temperature between the locations of the measuring rotor and the reference rotor. A signal processor provides an indication of the accuracy of the gas turbine meter based on the quotient of a measuring signal, which is proportional to the speed of rotation of the measuring rotor, divided by a reference signal, which is proportional to the speed of rotation of the reference rotor.

    • A protected, but unsealed rotor bearing for flowmeter turbine rotors and the like has an annular shoulder protruding axially from the rotor in concentric relation to the rotor axis in a manner that defines a cavity protruding axially into the rotor. An elongated bearing body with a cylindrical peripheral surface is mounted in a supporting frame and protrudes axially into the cavity. An axle on which the rotor is mounted protrudes into a bore in the bearing body such that the bearing interface is between the surface of the axle and the surface of the bore in the bearing body. A ball in the bore between the bearing body and the axle bears axial thrust. The peripheral surface of the bearing body does not contact the annular shoulder, but a face on the annular sholder that extends radially outward from adjacent the peripheral surface of the bearing body acts as a centrifugal flinger to dynamically divert contaminant particles away from the bearing surfaces.

    • The disclosed flow-detecting apparatus involves gating of phase-related excitation and sensed signals from electrodes close to a flow-activated tracker in a liquid passage. A high gain comparator provides peak-limited signals to the phase-comparison gate. In one form, a pair of excitation electrodes are symmetrical in relation to a single sensing electrode. That electrode supplies a sensed signal to one comparator input, the other comparator input having fixed bias. In another form, a pair of sensing electrodes are disposed in an excitation pattern between a localized excitation electrode and a metal pipe that forms the passage and acts as a second excitation electrode. The sensed signals reach respective input terminals of a high-gain comparator and it responds to the difference between the inputs. Other configurations of the electrodes and their excitation are disclosed, including one that promotes rejection of common-mode spurious signals. A comparator that receives flow-representing signals is stabilized against electrical unbalance by a negative feedback loop having a long time constant. In flow-detection apparatus having a multiple-rotor flow-sensing probe, separate flow-detection circuits are used for the respective rotors. The outputs of the flow-representing circuits are combined. Use of different excitation frequencies for those flow-detection circuits adds assurance of non-interfering operation of the flow-detection circuits.

    • An improved rotor for fluid flow meters having a rotor hub with a vane hub mounted thereon including spaced inner and outer cylindrical walls. These inner and outer cylindrical walls are provided with grooves and slot respectively that are radially aligned and which are inclined relative to the direction of fluid flow and provide adjacent support surfaces for a plurality of vanes. A cap element assembled on one end of the rotor hub in engagement with the outer cylindrical wall maintains the vanes in operating position and provides a means whereby the vanes can be readily removed or replaced when desired.

    • A flowmeter having a flow passageway with co-axial inlet and outlet openings at its opposite ends and a vaned flow measuring rotor between the openings. The rotor is mounted in low friction bearings and yet the meter is operable within the normal accuracy specification for a conventional high-friction meter as a result of the presence of a constriction in the passageway upstream of the rotor. The passageway and constriction are of circular cross section and the constriction has a main portion which opens directly at the downstream end near the rotor, and a tapering upstream portion connecting with the passageway. The constriction affects flow at the rotor at turbulent but not at laminar velocities.
