    • An apparatus for treating a particulate material, in particular for mixing, drying, granulating, pelletizing and/or coating the material, has a container which has a process chamber arranged around a longitudinal mid-axis of the container and formed as an annular chamber, and also a container central duct, separated from the process chamber, as a flow duct for process air, which duct opens into the lower region of the process chamber, an upper region of the process chamber being open. In at least one first operating state, the upper open region of the process chamber communicates with the container central duct so as to conduct process air, by the container central duct widening circumferentially towards the upper region of the process chamber and opening towards the process chamber. In a method for treating particulate material, the material is put into the container, and process air is introduced from the container central duct into the lower region of the process chamber and flows upwards in the process chamber in order to move the material in the process chamber. The process air emerges from the process chamber again from the upper region of the latter, the process air, at least in a first treatment phase, after emerging from the upper region of the process chamber, being led at least partly into the container central duct in a continued circulation-type flow and there being led downwards again, where it is introduced into the process chamber once more.

    • A shrouded attrition nozzle for use in fluidized bed jet attrition. The nozzle comprises a shroud surrounding the nozzle and extending upwardly from the nozzle tip. The shroud is sized so as not to interfere with the periphery of the jet emitted from the nozzle and may be cylindrical or inverted frustoconical in shape. When a desired spacing is achieved between the periphery of the jet and the shroud, fluidizable material enters the interior of the shroud from the open end, moving countercurrently towards the nozzle tip. A disengagement of fluidization gas from fluidizable material occurs and an increased entrainment of solids in the jet leads to improvements in grinding efficiency. The result is a reduction in jet flowrate and fluidization gas wastage, which reduces overall energy requirements for attrition. A method of causing attrition of a fluidizable material using the shrouded nozzle is also disclosed.

    • The improved Wurster of the present invention includes an air diverter which supplies a flow of air in a radial direction adjacent the spray nozzle body and spray nozzle, so as to force the product away from the nozzle during the spraying process. The air diverter includes a sleeve with air passages therein, a manifold connected to the sleeve and to a source of secondary pressurized air or gas, and a collar to mount the assembled air diverter onto the perforated plate of the Wurster apparatus. In operation, the air diverter allows the spray pattern from the nozzle to more fully develop, allows more complete atomization of the spray solution, and allows for higher spray rates with little or no agglomeration of the product.

    • A process used to coat particles in an upward flowing fluidized bed dryer includes an insert disposal within the dryer. The insert includes a vertically adjustable cylindrical partition and a vertically adjustable spray nozzle wherein the cylindrical partition has a diameter-to-length ratio greater than 1. The particles are fluidized using a gas and are processed through a coating zone containing the cylindrical partition and become coated with the liquid spray. The particles exit the coating zone and enter the reconditioning zone wherein the liquid is allowed to dry onto the particles. The particles fall into the fluidized bed and are reprocessed through the coating zone by a draft effect created by the atomizing gas in the spray nozzle. The insert provides liquid coating flexibility allowing for the coating of liquid fat onto the particles. Additionally, since less fluidizing gas is required and not all of the particle bed needs to be fluidized, the coating process is more efficient and gentle. The coating process is continued until a selected weight percentage relative to the weight of the particles is coated onto the particles.

    • An apparatus and method for processing materials in a batchwise or continuous fluidised bed, such as a drier, in which the fluidised bed is subdivided into a plurality of smaller areas, to each of which two separately controlled gas flows are provided. The first lower gas flow is provided to the bed preferably all of the time, and is sufficient at least to maintain the bed in an expanded state. The second higher gas flow is provided to each separate area of the bed in sequence by means of a rotary valve arrangement, and is high enough to induce fluidisation in the bed, but not high enough to induce significant solids loss by entrainment in the offtake gas. The higher flow sequence can be chosen to provide almost any desired sequence to the separate parts of the bed. The sequence can be chosen to induce a travelling wave within the bed which can be across or along the bed, and can be skewed relative to the sides of the bed. In a continuously operated bed, the travelling wave can move either co-currently with, counter-currently to, or cross-currently to, the direction of flow of the solids through the bed. This form of operation, particularly with a skewed travelling wave, improves bed operating efficiency. Since the rotary valve cannot be closed completely, problems associated with abrasive dust in the gas feed, of valve lubrication, and valve differential thermal expansion are all substantially avoided.
