    • A clutch arrangement for use in a power tool having a multi-speed transmission assembly. The clutch arrangement includes a clutch member and a follower member. The clutch member is coupled to a member of the transmission assembly that is proximate the torsional input of the transmission assembly and which must be in a non-rotating position to permit the transmission assembly to perform a torque multiplication operation. The follower member is biased into engagement with the clutch member to inhibit relative rotation therebetween. As the clutch member and the transmission member are coupled to one another, the transmission assembly is able to perform a torque multiplication operation. When, however, the torsion that is exerted onto the clutch member is sufficient to overcome the frictional engagement between the follower and clutch members, the clutch member, and the transmission member, rotate, thereby inhibiting the capability of the transmission to continue to perform the torque multiplication operation.

    • An automatic transmission for five forward speeds equipped with a main transmission mechanism and an auxiliary transmission mechanism. The auxiliary transmission mechanism includes a multi-disc clutch and a hydraulic servo therefor arranged in a first planetary gear set. The first planetary gear set includes a first ring gear connected to an output unit of the main transmission mechanism and a first carrier connected to an output shaft and further to a first sun gear through a multi-disc clutch and a hydraulic servo for the former. The hydraulic servo for the multi-disc clutch is connected to an integral casing through a band brake and is arranged around the outer circumference of the hydraulic servo for the multi-disc clutch. A second planetary gear set is arranged on the hydraulic servo for the multi-disc clutch and includes a second ring gear connected to the output shaft, a second carrier connected to the integral casing through a multi-disc brake and a second sun gear connected to the first sun gear through the cylinder of a hydraulic servo for the multi-disc clutch. The rear casing forms part of the cylinder of the hydraulic servo for the multi-disc brake. The auxiliary transmission mechanism has a compact three-speed construction to provide five forward speeds in cooperation with the main transmission mechanism. The five-speed automatic transmission can be easily modified merely by removing the second planetary gear set and the brake for the 1st speed to provide a four-speed transmission at a reasonable cost due to the sharing of parts in common.

    • An automatic transmission includes a fluid torque converter and a first and second gear transmission mechanisn, each of which has two coaxial drive members--a power input member and a power output member--and is selectable to any one of several speed radios. Rotational power is output from the fluid torque converter to the power input member of the first gear transmission mechanism. The torque converter, and the first gear transmission mechanism including the power input and output members thereof are all coaxial on a first axis. The power input and output members of the second gear transmission mechanism rotate around a second axis parallel to the first axis, and a first lay shaft element is coupled to this power input member and extends along this second axis out from one side of the second gear transmission mechanism and is rotationally coupled to the power output member of the first gear transmission mechanism by a rotational power transfer mechanism, while a second lay shaft element is coupled to the power output member of the second gear transmission mechanism and extends along this second axis out from the other side of the second gear transmission mechanism and is fixedly coupled to a power output gear wheel.

    • A two speed differential axle is disclosed having a lubricant containing housing which encloses engageable differential and planetary gear assemblies. An input shaft extends into the housing and has a pinion gear rigidly affixed to an inner portion thereof. The pinion gear is adapted to drive the differential and planetary gear assemblies. Two pinion bearing assemblies are positioned within a bore in the housing through which the input shaft extends. The pinion bearings operatively support the rotatable input shaft. A generally flat and annular baffle is rigidly affixed to the inner portion of the input shaft between the pinion bearings and the pinion gear. The baffle, the innermost pinion bearing, and a portion of the housing define a lubricant pump chamber for pressurizing and pumping lubricant. The housing further comprises a lubricant passageway having an inlet in communication with the lubricant pump chamber and positioned between the pinion bearings and the baffle, and an outlet adjacent the differential gear assembly. Means are provided for circulating lubricant from the differential gears to an area adjacent the pinion bearings, which are adapted for pumping the lubricant into the lubricant pump chamber and against the rotatable baffle. In operation the rotating baffle creates a lubricant pressure head within the lubricant pump chamber and at the inlet of the lubricant passageway which induces rapid circulation of lubricant through the housing.
