    • A series of related clinch joints as well as methods and apparatus for forming these joints are disclosed. All of the leak proof drawings are capable of being fabricated using a solid non-radially expandable die having a recessed cavity formed therein for cooperation with a corresponding punch having a solid punch projection. The clearance between the punch and the die recess are specifically sized relative to the material thickness to achieve optimum fastening characteristics. Several joint embodiments utilize variable clearance between the punch and the die to minimize strength variability resulting from changing material thickness. Alternative lance type and leak proof joints utilize a variable clearance between the punch and the die to achieve both high, shear and peel strength in a single joint design.

    • An apparatus for connecting stacked thin plates 4, 5 (in particular sheet-metal plates) or plate sections, according to which stacked flat parts 10, 11 of both plates are first deep drawn together with one another, after which the bottom area of the deep-drawn flat parts is swaged wider, and wherein the radial expansion of the bottom area of these deep-drawn flat parts is limited, as a result of which a plastic deformation of the material of the plate takes place, particularly in the peripheral area, so that a connection point is created. By means of a crimp 17 present in the peripheral area of the bottom 16 of the blind opening 3 of the die 2, the swaged material flows into itself at the points that are to be connected, and hence the clinching strength, is improved.

    • A banding strap for attaching a heat shield to a muffler comprises a strap for encircling the muffler and heat shield, the strap including an underlying end segment and an overlying end segment, each including outwardly projecting shoulder sections providing abutments for crimping to interlock the end segments and tighten the strap around the muffler and heat shield. The outwardly projecting shoulder section in the overlying end segment forms an inwardly opening bight for receiving the outwardly projecting shoulder section in the underlying end segment. Each shoulder section includes an inwardly projecting indentation so that the indentation of one of the shoulder sections nests within the indentation of the other of the shoulder sections when the shoulder sections are engaged to prevent lateral misalignment of the end segments with respect to each other.
