摘要： Methods are provided for determining the surface fatty acid content in a wood pulp or whitewater sample. The methods comprise reacting free fatty acids which are present on the surface of the wood pulp fibers in the sample or in the whitewater with one or more reagents to form a measurable species, and determining the fatty acid content from the quantitative measurement of the measurable species. The method is useful as a quick, portable, accurate and low cost assay for assessing the fatty acid content present at various sample points in pulp and paper mills. The method for determining the free fatty acid content can be conducted in a batch process (e.g., where samples are collected periodically and the test is conducted offline). Alternatively, the method for determining the free fatty acid content can be conducted in a continuous or semi-continuous process (e.g., online sampling/analysis).

摘要： The present invention is directed to an improved process for inhibiting calcium carbonate scaling in aqueous systems such as that employed in the kraft process for the production of wood pulp. Such an improved process is achieved by the addition to the system of at least one antiscalant comprising at least one monomer unit derived from the group consisting of 1,2-dihydroxy-3-butene, N-(hydroxymethyl) acrylamide, and N-(sulfomethyl) acrylamide, and at least one monomer unit derived from the group consisting of maleic acid, acrylic acid, acrylamide, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, vinyl sulfonic acid, styrene sulfonic acid, N-tertbutylacrylamide, butoxymethylacrylamide, N,N-dimethylacrylamide, sodium acrylamidomethyl propane sulfonic acid, and salts thereof, with with the proviso that said polymers do not contain the monomer unit —(CH2—CH═CH—CH2—O)—.

摘要： A method of treating papermaking white water which contains dissolved solids, usually of a biodegradable organic nature. According to the invention, the dissolved organic solids, which are objectionable because they cause process equipment corosion, undesirable product and process odors and water pollution, are treated with ultraviolet light so as to lower their concentration and eliminate these problems. The light treatment causes material of relatively simple chemical structure to polymerize into more complex, less soluble materials which can easily be removed from the system as they become less soluble. The method is applicable to papermaking and other industries process using large quantities of process water. The treatment cell, which preferably operates on clarified white water, may be placed in series with the process while water flow or in parallel therewith, and can be operated as a continuing treatment process or as a intermittent treatment process.
