    • An accumulator for business forms is easily inserted into, or removed from, a path of continuous format, zig-zag business forms being fed from one business form handling machine (such as a folder) to another (such as a mailing machine like an inserter). A barrier having drive belts on one face is movable from a position allowing forms to pass under it, to a barrier position in which the forms engage the barrier and are slowly driven up the barrier until they bend over by their own weight onto a shelf. The forms are also driven along a shelf into contact with a stop, and a stack of forms is formed on the shelf. By handling the forms in this way the forms are creased along the perforations between the continuous forms (making subsequent separation easier) and prevented from developing a curl.

    • A bulk material feeder (10) has two rollers (12,14), at least the lower (14) of which is driven (24,26). Strip material (34) is threaded around the side of the upper roller (12) toward the direction of feed, between the rollers (12,14), around the side of the lower roller (14) opposite the direction of feed and to downstream machinery (38) spaced from the feeder (10). Roller (12,14) spacing is greater than material (34) thickness precluding compression of the material (34). Feed is produced by friction between the roller (14) and material (34) only. Feed rate is greater than usage thereby producing a depending loop (40) between the feeder (10) and the downstream machinery (38). In one embodiment, increasing loop (40) size decreases material (34) and roller (14) contact, causing relative slippage and a discontinuance of feed. In another embodiment, both rollers (12,14) are driven and loop (40) size is limited by a photoelectric device (42) and associated control circuitry.

    • A product display marking system for use with product shelves that have plural shelf channels, which receive product markers, and wherein each shelf channel has a channel length. The system includes a bulk product marker that is configured as a continuous strip of material that has a width selected to fit the plural shelf channels, and that has plural tear lines oriented transverse to the continuous length, and which are spaced apart by a strip length that is an integer divisor of the plural channel lengths. One or more strip lengths of the bulk product marker, which are selected to equal a selected one of the plural channel lengths, are selected and torn along one of the plural tear lines, for insertion into the selected one of the plural shelf channels, thereby marking the product disposed thereon.

    • A package of strip material includes a plurality of stacks of the strip side by side where each strip forms a stacked fan folded supply of the strip which is spliced to or arranged so that it can be subsequently spliced to a next adjacent strip for supply of a continuous strip from the package. The side by side stacks are simultaneously built up from the bottom by moving a carriage back and forth below a stationary bottom surface of the stacks with the strips supplied side by side through a slot in the carriage. The stacks are supported side by side as they are built up by rigid side walls of a chute or rectangular container into which the package is to be packaged for transportation. Splice tail portions extend from the strips and are supported or arranged so that they are ready for splicing when the package is completed before transportation. Transfer of the completed stacks is effected simultaneously by a slip sheet arrangement or by moving one of the belts of the carriage as an ejection belt. A method for forming a package of a plurality of side-by-side stacks of continuous strips of material in a rectangular container is also provided. Each strip is folded back and forth about first and second fold lines to form a stack of a plurality of folded overlying strip portions which are arranged side-by-side so that the side edges are aligned. The fold lines are transverse to the strip and arranged at opposite ends of the stack. A splice tail portion extending from a first strip end portion of each stack is spliced to a second strip end portion. The stacks are compressed such that their height is equal to that of the container and the splice tail portions remain loose and uncompressed.

    • A process for controlling the drive of a reel of a continuous web of material which is fed to a processing machine (packaging machine). The web of material forms a material reservoir upstream of the processing machine. The invention is based on the object to improve this process such that the reel can be driven as continuously as possible for refeeding material into the material reservoir. For this purpose, the filling of the material reservoir is (continuously) determined and the drive of the reel is driven in dependence on the reservoir filling, such that the filling does not fall below a minimum filling and does not exceed a maximum filling. The reservoir filling is preferably determined by comparing the reservoir outflow with the reservoir inflow as well as by a more direct method, preferably by an optical scanning or weighing. The invention further relates to a feed apparatus for conducting this process.

    • A fabric accumulation apparatus including a housing defining a fabric entrance, a fabric exit and a generally vertical fabric storage area therebetween. A gate is located along the fabric housing, being moveable between a closed and an open position. First sensors are located along the path of travel of the gate and are operatively associated with apparatus for opening and closing the gate. Second sensors are located along the path of gate travel and are operatively associated with fabric feed to control the rate of fabric feed dependent upon the height of a fabric column in the housing.Initially, in a filling mode and with the gate closed, fabric is fed into the housing at a high rate of speed relative to fabric withdrawal speed and a fabric bundle is produced thereabove, which ultimately forces the gate to start to open. The gate is then rapidly fully opened and closed, permitting the fabric bundle to drop into the fabric storage area. When fabric builds up adequately in the storage area, the gate will not fully close and is sensed in the partial open position, at which point the sensor signals fabric feed reduced to a slow rate mode which remains so long as the fabric column interferes with opening and closing of the gate.
