    • A mechanism (C) for tensioning a web extending from a rotating roll (R) includes three fluid relays (200-202) and two amplifiers (204, 205). A variable pressure pilot signal (P) drives a piston (66) of a rotational control apparatus (A) to create a pilot torque to the rotating roll (R). In the event that the variable pressure pilot signal (P) exceeds the bias pressures (B1-B3) of the fluid relays (200-202), the pistons (64, 68, 70, 72 and 74) are driven by fluid relays (200-202) to create relay torques to the rotating roll (R) in addition to the pilot torque in direct proportion to differences between the variable pressure pilot signal (P) and the bias pressures (B1-B3). The relay torques created by the second and third relays (201, 202) are amplified by the amplifiers (204, 205). Thus, the rotational control apparatus (A) can be fully utilized for its full torque range while still providing enough resolution to control tension of the web (W) precisely.

    • A tape display device comprises a housing supporting a pair of parallel rollers between which a tape is adapted to be wound back and forth to display different visual information contained on the tape. The rollers are driven by a continuous belt via an electric motor. One of the rollers is a tension roller which maintains tension in the tape as it is wound back and forth between the rollers. The tension roller consists of a cylinder having end caps for providing bearing surfaces which bear on respective bushes in the housing to provide rotational mounting of the roller. A drive pinion on the outside of the housing has a stub-axle which extends through the bush and end cap and into the cylinder. A spiral tension spring is attached between the end of the stub-axle and a flange of the end cap. The spring is located within the cylinder and allows relative movement between the cylinder and pinion and maintains tension in the tape as the two rollers rotate in synchronism and the diameter of the tape on each roller varies.

    • An unwind stand for unwinding rolled material is disclosed in which a movable carriage mounted on a stationary frame includes at least two roll holders adapted to support a roll of material and a shifting mechanism connected to the movable carriage for moving the carriage between a first unwinding position in which a first roll of material supported by a first roll holder is positioned for unwinding, and a second unwinding position in which a second roll of material supported by a second roll holder is positioned for unwinding. Once a roll is in the unwinding position, the shifting mechanism also functions to maintain the material unwinding from the roll in an alignment position in response to an alignment detector by making fine adjustments to the lateral position of the carriage. The unwind stand may also include a rotatable wheel connected to a carrier slidably mounted on a rodless cylinder for applying a radial braking force to the roll of material, thereby imparting tension to the unwinding material. The rotatable wheel may include a pair of friction discs surrounding a portion of the wheel which can be adjustably compressed to control the slip torque of the wheel, thereby further controlling the tension of the unwinding material.

    • A supply roll of thin liner material for carrying a strip of resilient plastic material is mounted for rotation with the axis of rotation in a horizontal position. An arm is mounted adjacent the supply roll for swinging movement toward and away from the axis of rotation of the roll. A peel-off roller is mounted on the distal end of the arm and is rotatable for rolling engagement with the supply roll. The liner material carrying the strip of resilient plastic material is directed around the peel-off roller and over an idler roller located at a position such that a force component acting on the arm resulting from the tension in the liner is in the direction of the supply roll for urging the peel-off roller against the supply roll. This provides a regular and minimal tension in the liner while the liner is pulled off the supply roll over the idler roller and to a driven liner take-up. The diameter of the peel-off roller is small as compared to the diameter of the supply roll causing the liner to undergo a sharp change in direction when leaving the supply roll which facilitates the peeling off of the liner. After passing around the idler roller the liner carrying the strip of resilient plastic material passes over a separating roller for separating the strip of resilient plastic material from the liner.
