    • Technology is disclosed for tsunami survival shelters. In various embodiments, a tsunami survival shelter comprises a vertical support column designed to withstand forces exerted by anticipated tsunamis and accompanying debris field; a buoyant inflatable survival life raft removably attached near a top portion of the vertical support column and capable of floating free from the vertical support column, and thereby protecting the occupants in the event of failure or overtopping of the support column; and adornments and coloring to allow the vertical support column and survival raft to blend with their surroundings by imitating trees indigenous to the area.

    • A self-righting inflatable life raft having a raft body formed by inflatable sidewalls, a floor above a bottom of the sidewalls, a line of rotation of the raft defined by the outer perimeter of the raft body about which the raft body rotates on the surface of the water when moved from an inverted position to an upright position. The center of gravity of the raft body is spaced a first predetermined distance from the line of rotation and displaced horizontally from the line of rotation when the raft is inverted. At least three inflatable spaced apart tube members extending upwardly and outwardly from the perimeter of the raft body at an angle from the perpendicular to the raft body to a sufficient degree and having a buoyancy sufficient such that the moment exerted on the raft about the line of rotation by the weight of the raft acting through its center of gravity causes the raft body to topple by gravity to an upright position. A tie fixed to and extending between two points on the raft limits separation of the two points to the length of the tie during and after inflation of the tube members, which two points are chosen to inhibit distortion or collapse of the tube members from their desired positions when inflated.

    • An inflatable liferaft improves disaster victims' chances of survival, pacularly in cold waters. Three inflatable ribs support a layered canopy from the sides of the raft to assure protection from the elements. A highly reflective coating or an equivalent space-blanket type material is provided on the inside of the canopy to help keep the occupants warm and act as a radar reflector. The inflatable ribs also aerodynamically shape the raft to stabilize it in high wind states and while being towed through the air by a rescue helicopter. A hoisting harness cradles the bottom and sides of the raft and is connected to an enlarged hoisting eye located overhead or floating on the water to assure an unassisted, reliable engagement by a helicopter-born hook. After the hook has engaged the hoisting eye and as the harness lifts the raft from the water, a number of covers located along the bottom of the raft's hemispherical ballasting chamber are pulled from their respective openings to allow the rapid dumping of ballast water. Thusly relieved of this load, the helicopter can rapidly transport the survivors to a medical facility. Because the liferaft is plucked from the water intact, the incapacitated have a better chance of survival and the others along with the rescue team are not exposed further to cold water or the helicopter's downwash.
