    • An apparatus for cleaning welds on and machining rectangular plastic frames, such as sash frames, includes a supporting arrangement capable of rigidly supporting two plastic frames and holding them one above the other for cleaning and machining. Preferably, there are two tool mounting mechanisms each of which is equipped with two frame cleaning tools and at least one pair of machining tools. Each tool mounting mechanism is capable of moving its tools both horizontally and vertically and each is located adjacent a respective side of the supporting arrangement. The cleaning tools are mounted one above the other on each tool mounting mechanism as are the machining tools. The cleaning tools and the machining tools are capable of carrying out weld cleaning or machining on both plastic frames simultaneously.

    • An improvement to a friction stir welding tool having a rotating member, the improvement including an attachable cutting tool (30) having one or more radial cutting edges (32). A first embodiment of a cutting tool including one or more cutting inserts (42), each cutting insert having a lower end cutting edge; a like number of insert-engaging grooves (44); a collar (46) sized to closely engage around the rotating member with engaged inserts; a collar attachment arrangement for securing the collar (46) to the rotating member (38); and a number of set screws (48) for anchoring the cutting inserts (42) to the member (38). A second embodiment of a cutting tool including a cutting insert holder (60) having a lower end cutting edge; an insert holder hole (62) extending through the rotating member, the insert holder hole oriented angularly away from the rotating member axis of rotation (64); a threaded radial hole (66) formed in the rotating member (38); and a single screw fastener (68) for turning into the radial hole to press against the cutting insert holder. A third embodiment of a cutting tool including one or more tabs (80) extending radially from the rotating member (38). A cornered cutting insert (70) is removably attached to the lower end of each tab. The cornered cutting insert (70) includes one or more corners (72) to act as cutting edges. Additionally provided is an improved method of friction stir welding including attaching a cutting tool having a cutting edge to a conventional friction stir welding tool and providing liquid to the cutting edge as the weld is being formed in order to quickly cool the cutting edge surfaces so that the material will not adhere to the cutting edges, allowing the cutting tool to machine excess weld material away.

    • The present invention relates to the field of article manufacture and more particularly to an apparatus for removing the flashing from a manufactured article. The apparatus includes at least one gripping unit for gripping a portion of the flashing. The gripping unit is switched by a pneumatic actuator between an open and a clamping configuration. A support is provided upon which each gripping unit is movably mounted, and an indexing actuator is provided for indexing each gripping unit along the support between a rest position displaced from the support surface and a clamping position adjacent to the support surface. A control unit is provided for controlling the operation of the pneumatic actuator and the indexing actuator to effect removal of the flashing. The control unit causes each gripping unit, when in the clamping position, to switch from the open configuration to the clamping configuration to grip the flashing. Subsequently, the control unit causes each gripping unit to return from the clamping position to the rest position so that the flashing is removed from the article. The control unit then causes the gripping unit to switch to the open configuration to release the flashing. Other aspects of the invention provide proximity sensors for sensing the position of each gripping unit and a disposal track for removing the flashing to another location once it is removed from the article by the gripping unit.
