    • A safety shut off mechanism for a fluid-powered motor comprises a reaction torque structure tending the rotate in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the motor under load a swing-bar for normally restraining the reaction torque structure against rotation, a reference structure for providing a point of reference as to movement of the reaction torque structure, a locking structure actuated by fluid pressure for locking the reference structure against rotation, a retaining structure tending to retain the reaction torque structure and the reference structure in a predetermined orientation relative to each other, and a shut-off structure for depriving the motor of the motive force of the fluid in response to relative movement between the reaction torque structure and the reference structure upon failure of the swing-bar.

    • An automatic, push-to-start, fluid-operated screwdriver is disclosed including a magazine providing a supply of fasteners so that only a source of fluid pressure is required for operation. A control valve is responsive to push-to-start actuation for automatically initiating a series of steps including (a) commencing operation of a fluid operated motor, (b) terminating operation of the motor when a predetermined torque level is applied to the fastener, (c) causing a subsequent fastener to be released from the magazine, (d) relatively shifting a fastener holder and rotary drive means for allowing the subsequent fastener to enter into alignment with the rotary drive means, (e) causing the holder to secure the fastener in engagement with the rotary drive means, and (f) thereafter returning to the condition prior to step (a) so that the machine is automatically conditioned for driving the subsequent fastener upon push-to-start actuation. The control valve also causes pressurization of a fluid reservoir during operation of the motor. After termination of motor operation, air pressure from the reservoir shifts the holder and rotary drive means for allowing introduction of the subsequent fastener, the holder and rotary drive means thereafter being returned to secure the subsequent fastener in engagement with the rotary drive means. The screwdriver also includes a magazine mounting alternate threaded fasteners with their ends in opposing relation, a gate assembly releasing individual fasteners from the magazine in uniform alignment.

    • The air tool of this invention features a shut-off valve in a motor inlet passage with an air bias compartment at one end of the valve and a motor pressure compartment at an opposite end of the valve directly communicating with the inlet to the motor. The air bias compartment has adjustable air bleed means for selectively reducing the pressure in the air bias compartment from a predetermined line pressure to a desired operating pressure at a constant percentage less than the predetermined line pressure. To establish the predetermined line pressure of the air supplied to the motor and to the air bias compartment of the shut-off valve, a stall torque regulator is provided upstream of the shut-off valve. This regulator serves to maximize the flexibility of the tool by providing for the adjustment of the tool to a given range of pressure and torque at which the motor will shut off but without undesirably affecting the free running speed of the motor within that given range.

    • A torque tool having a rotation transmitting, torque sensing, energy absorbing, non-overriding mechanism interconnecting a motor and a rotatable driven head. The mechanism includes a driven member coupled to the head and a driver coupled to the motor with the driver yieldably biased toward the driven member. The driven member has cam surfaces facing the driver engaged by bearing surfaces on the driver. The cam surfaces on the driven member permit rotation of the driver relative to the driven member and are sloped such that a preselected torque between the driven member and driver results in the rotation and translation of the driver relative to the driven member. The translation is communicated for the release of a valve rod which actuates a valve to shutoff the motor. The kinetic energy causing relative rotation after shutoff of the motor is stored and dissipated by springs.

    • A speed shifting mechanism for a pneumatic wrench or nutsetter comprises a planetary gear arrangement in the drive mechanism of the wrench in which the planet gear carrier is connected to the driver clutch member of a torque responsive clutch and the planetary ring gear is mounted in a one way clutch to provide for unidirectional rotation of the ring gear. The torque responsive clutch is of the sloping tooth type and the driving clutch member is connected to a piston having opposing faces and fitted in the tool housing to form opposed fluid chambers. Pressure fluid is admitted to one of the chambers at a controlled pressure to act on the piston for holding the clutch in the engaged condition. Movement of the driving clutch member at torque causes pressure fluid at the controlled pressure to be vented and the opposite chamber to become pressurized thereby acting on the clutch to disengage and enable the planetary gear arrangement to become operative to reduce the output speed of the wrench.
