    • The present invention provides apparatus and methods for pro-active, intelligent fire suppression and/or control using a micro-controller that is communicatably connected to at least one fire-energy detection sensor and to at least one fire suppression device. The present invention provides apparatus and methods for sensing the exact direction of a fire as well as a regional location of a fire. The present invention provides apparatus and methods for directing a fire suppressant at the source of the flame. As depicted in FIG. 1a, the present invention provides fine protection apparatus (10) for identifying the existence of a fire hazard and for determining the exact direction and regional location of the file hazard by using multiple infrared (IR) detectors. A first IR detector (20) with a wide angle view of an area of coverage corresponding to an area requiring fire protection will be continuously queried by a micro-controller (100). During normal operation, the wide-angle IR detector (20) will be located in no specific position but will be generally pointed towards the area requiring fire protection. The present invention further provides a second IR detector (30) with a narrow-angle field of view that is mounted on a movable platform (45) comprising an elevation manipulator (50) and an azimuthal manipulator (60). The elevation manipulator (50) of the movable platform (45) is connected to a second stepper-motor (91). The second stepper-motor (91) controls the elevation manipulator (50). The outer edge of the circumference of the azimuthal manipulator (60) of the movable platform (45) forms a first cog wheel (61). The first cog wheel (61) contacts a second cog wheel (62) which is connected to and driven by a first stepper-motor (90).

    • A modular fire detection and extinguishing system is disclosed that is inexpensive, compact, and modular to allow easy aftermarket installation in a variety of vehicles. The system may include a detector, a trigger coupled to the detector and a gas generant fire extinguisher, a modular distribution line in fluid communication with the extinguisher and a nozzle. The system allows exhaust gas from the gas generant fire extinguisher to carry dry powdered fire suppressant from the fire extinguisher and through the nozzle to disperse the fire suppressant substantially uniformly throughout a fire hazard zone. The extinguisher is installed such that exhaust gas must aerate substantially all the fire suppressant before exiting the extinguisher.

    • A fire protection system employs a plurality of radio frequency transmitter temperature sensors remotely located around a building to be protected, one or more sprinkler heads coupled to a water supply line and mounted on the roof of the building to provide sprinkler coverage of the building and a perimeter area surrounding the building, and control circuitry responsive to a radio frequency signal transmited by one or more of the remotely located temperature sensors when a temperature exceeding a threshold temperature of the sensors is sensed thereby to initiate the flow of water to the one or more sprinkler heads for a predetermined period of time. Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the fire protection system. Further, since many modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to falling within the scope of the invention.

    • A fire suppression system for a process station, or chemical wet bench, employs an electro-optical fire detector and system controller to detect a fire in the process station. The system controller is coupled to a solenoid valve that is opened when a fire is detected by the fire detector, causing the fire suppressant to be delivered to a nozzle positioned in the process station. The nozzle atomizes the fire suppressant flowing through the nozzle so as to substantially cover the interior space of the process station with fire suppressant. The fire suppressant may be water provided by a local sprinkler system, and the nozzle is configured to atomize the fire suppressant when the fire suppressant is delivered to the nozzle under relatively low pressure.

    • A range hood positioned above a cooking range employs a continuous heat sensor system which includes twisted wires which are separated from one another by an insulator which is formed of a material which melts at a predetermined temperature. The wires carry a supervisory current which is monitored continuously. When the magnitude of the current is increased, such as by the creation of a short-circuit condition as would be caused by the presence of a fire, an actuation signal is issued to an actuator, which may include an explosive squib. The explosive squib releases a tension wire which holds a discharge valve in a closed position, permitting a fire suppressant fluid to be discharged from a supply tank. Monitor circuitry ensures that open-circuit or short-circuit faults do not disable the functioning of the actuation system. Multi-condition fault indicators alert the user visually and audibly of system faults.

    • A fire control system is disclosed herein having a plurality of hot wire electromechanical activators for non-explosive initiation of a corresponding plurality of fire extinguishers. The activators may be connected either in parallel for increased reliability or in series for increased ease in testing for continuity. Each activator has a split collet formed of two spool halves with a restraining wire wrapped around it having a hook at one end attached to a hot wire which is connected to electrical leads mounted on one of the spool halves. A shaft contacts the split collet in such a manner so as to cause the spool halves to separate when not restrained by the restraining wire. Displacement of the shaft is obtained by applying an actuation current to the leads which reduces the tensile strength of the hot wire until it falls below the tensile stress applied by the restraining wire. When the hot wire fails in tension, the restraining wire is released to thereby permit the spool halves to separate to permit the shaft to be displaced by an internal spring or external force. The shaft is connected either directly to a utilization device such as a fire extinguisher for displacement thereof in a direction parallel to the centerline of the shaft or through a cylinder having fingers for displacement at an angle to the centerline of the shaft.
