    • A method of responding to obstacles encountered by a harvesting pickup apparatus that moves in the harvesting direction, the method including the steps of driving a pickup reel, pivoting at least one structural member, and positioning a path of continuous loop device. The driving of a pickup reel step includes driving the reel with a continuous loop device about a first axis. The pivoting step includes pivoting the at least one structural member about a second axis, the pickup reel being supported by the structural member. The positioning step includes positioning a path of the continuous loop device so that a tight side of the device is located in the harvesting direction from both the first axis and the second axis. This step also includes configuring the harvesting pickup apparatus so that the structural member is pivoted about the second axis in a generally upward direction when the harvesting pickup apparatus encounters an obstacle.

    • A hay baler provided with a tubular duct within which charges of crop material are prepared before being stuffed into the baling chamber has a windrow pickup device at its front end to lift crop materials off the ground as the baler advances. The effective operating width of the pickup is wider than the inlet to the duct so that the stream of crop materials lifted off the ground must be converged centrally into alignment with the inlet before entering the same. A pair of lower stub augers on opposite sides of the inlet are assisted by a pair of upper stub augers rotating in opposite directions relative to the lower augers to accomplish such convergence. A windguard overlies the incoming crop flow as well as the consolidation zone between left and right sets of the stub augers so as to maintain effective control over the flow at all times.

    • A crop take-up arrangement is provided. The crop take-up arrangement includes a take-up rotor having several tine carriers with tines fastened to it that can be moved along a circular track, supported, free to rotate, about their axes of rotation. A housing contains the take-up rotor with strippers between which elongated intervening spaces remain through which the radially outer regions of the tines extend outward over a part of the circular track of the tine carriers. A drive shaft can be driven in two directions of rotation to drive the tine carriers around the circular track. It is proposed that the tine carriers be supported in bearings so as to pivot about their longitudinal axes between two end positions and be able to move between the end position as a function of the direction of rotation of the drive shaft.

    • A windrow pickup attachment for a forage harvester having a crop processing device including an input opening for receiving crop material.
