    • A method and apparatus for cutting pattern pieces from an anisotropic sheet material having different cutting characteristics along different principal directions utilize a small cutting wheel that is guided along the periphery of a pattern piece to be cut by means of a digital control computer. The computer derives command signals from a stored cutting program and applies the signals to drive motors within a tool carriage to cause the cutting wheel to move along the periphery of the pattern piece. A load control mechanism is utilized to support the cutting wheel from the tool carriage and to vary the force with which the wheel is urged or pressed into cutting contact with the sheet material. When the wheel moves in cutting engagement with the material in a direction that offers increased resistance to cutting, the load control mechanism presses the cutting wheel more firmly against the material and when the wheel moves in a direction of reduced cutting resistance, the load control mechanism partially unloads the wheel to prevent cutting or increased wear of the work surface on which the sheet material is supported.

    • In a photoexposure device for exposing lines on a photosensitive surface a rectangular aperture is used to form a rectangular spot of light projected onto the photosensitive surface and moved thereover to generate a line. During the exposure of a given line, the light spot is moved relative to the photosensitive surface in accordance with a velocity program which includes an acceleration stage at the beginning of the line, a deceleration stage at the end of the line, and possibly a constant velocity stage between the acceleration and deceleration stages. The width of the light spot, as measured in the direction of its travel, is varied in accordance with its velocity relative to the photosensitive surface to obtain distinct definition of the line at its ends and to obtain a substantially uniform exposure of the line along its length despite the changes in the velocity of the light spot. In one embodiment a pair of blades sliding in perpendicular directions form a variable aperture to determine the size and shape of the light spot. In another embodiment the source of light is a cathode ray tube, and the shape of the projected light spot is determined by the image on the face of the tube.

    • A system is disclosed for the automated assembly of a wire harness from one or more spools of premarked wire. The spools of wire are mounted on a cross-head which is movable in the Y direction on a carriage, movable in the X direction above a surface. A jig board is placed on this surface, and has wire holding devices at preselected locations for receiving the wire. Means is provided for feeding the wire downwardly through a funnel in the cross-head as the head is moved in response to a predetermined program from one point to another on the ''''plotting'''' surface. The head includes a tool for inserting the wire into wire retaining slots in the wire holding devices, and a cut-off knife is provided for severing the wire once a particular length has been layed-up.

    • A device for producing graphic art work by exposing a photosensitive surface consists of a device having a working surface for supporting a sheet of photosensitive material and a carriage movable in both directions over such working surface. The carriage carries a device for projecting light onto the photosensitive surface along a given line. The light projecting device is such that the light projected therefrom passes through a large number of discrete spots located along the given line, and means are provided for controlling the amount of light passing through each such outlet area and onto the photosensitive surface. The carriage is moved in a scanning fashion over the surface of the photosensitive material in a direction generally perpendicular to the projected line, and as such movement occurs the amount of light energy projected through each of the outlet areas is varied as necessary to produce the desired graphic. A computer receiving input information as to the desired graphic is used to control the scanning movement of the carriage and the variation of the light energy projected through each outlet area. The source of light energy may be either a cathode ray tube having a mask with a large number of openings, or a fiber-optic bundle having a separate light source for each fiber. A lens may be used between the surface from which the light is emitted and the photosensitive surface to effect a reduction in size.
