    • A combination engine cooling and passenger compartment heating system for an automotive vehicle, particularly suited for use with a Stirling engine. The system includes engine coolant temperature control means which permits the coolant temperature to rise to a predetermined magnitude as quickly as possible and maintains the coolant at that temperature. The control means also permits selective apportionment of engine coolant between the radiator and the heater to regulate the heat to the automobile passenger compartment and to lower the coolant temperature whenever possible. The preferred embodiment includes a control valve having a first thermostatic power source responsive to coolant temperature and a second thermostatic power source responsive to the vehicle operator or a signal other than the coolant temperature.

    • Multiple input warning system for a motor vehicle utilizing a single preferably audible warning device. It is actuated when a vehicle door is open and a key is in the ignition switch or when the door is open and the vehicle instrument panel lights are energized. Also, the warning device is energized if the ignition switch is in a particular position and an undesirable vehicle condition exists, such as vehicle speed in excess of a predetermined level, excessive engine coolant temperature or exhaust emission control system failure. Indicating lamps may be provided to give a visual indication of such undesirable vehicle conditions, and the multiple input system of the invention may include means for establishing the operability of the indicating lamps, without concurrent energization of the warning device, when the ignition switch is in a particular condition. Preferably, low cost integrated circuitry is utilized in the system.

    • A downdraft type carburetor has a conventional idle system with a transfer port cooperating with the edge of the throttle valve to permit normal idle speed fuel and airflow in one position and a less combustible mixture flow in a second position, as well as a third beyond normal fast idle engine start position; the three positions are controlled by a temperature sensitive vacuum operated servo cooperating with a solenoid operatively engaging the throttle valve; the servo initially positions the throttle valve during engine shutdown to its fast idle position for engine starting, and also permits the throttle valve to move to its most closed position after a running engine has been shut off, to prevent dieseling. The solenoid, when energized during engine operation, permits return of the throttle valve to the normal idle speed position upon release of the vehicle accelerator pedal.

    • An air cooled shroud for a gas turbine engine. Cooling permits reduced clearances between the inner surface of the shroud and the ends of the gasifier turbine rotor blade tips. Air from the compressor is introduced into an annular chamber surrounding the shroud. A band having etched grooves of approximately eightthousandths of an inch in depth is secured about the shroud wall. Air passing through the grooves sweeps and reduces the boundary layer of heated air at the shroud wall adjacent the rotor periphery and is exhausted into the combustion flow downstream of the gasifier rotor.

    • A rotor housing for a rotary internal combustion engine is disclosed having a wear-resistant coating system characterized by high temperature hardness stability and controlled porosity to improve the lubricating characteristics of the surface-to-surface engagement with the rotary apex seals. The coating system comprises a self-fused composite of martensitic stainless steel powder and an equally hard powder consisting of a nickel-based alloy. Powder particle size is controlled to render a smoother machined surface and sub-surface porosity. An intermediate transition coating may be used consisting of a composition selected from nickel aluminide, arc sprayed nickel, molybdenum, all effective to operate as a bonding intermediate to a supporting aluminum structure. A method of producing the wear-resistant coating system for a rotor housing is disclosed, comprising preparation of an aluminum casting having a supporting epitrochoid end wall, machining a reference, embedment of thermally resistant plugs about certain openings in the end wall, removing a uniform layer of said casting end wall to a predetermined depth, soft grit blasting of the removed surface, coating of the margins about ports in the end wall with an anti-bond material flame spraying the entire end wall with a mixture of martensitic stainless steel and a nickelbased alloy, immersing said coated casting in oil for a predetermined period of time immediately after coating, and grinding off a portion of said coating to the depth of said reference.
