    • A color television processing system enhances aperiodic transitions occurring in a quadrature modulated subcarrier by deriving a control signal from simultaneously occurring aperiodic transitions in the baseband of the carrier, such as luminance (or from chrominance in the absense of an effective luminance transition) without demodulation of the chroma subcarrier. The system includes an input, a delay match for delaying a first component of the modulated subcarrier signal by a predetermined amount, a one-half period delay for delaying a second component of the modulated subcarrier signal by half the period thereof, and a first adder for combining in equal amounts a third component of the modulated subcarrier with the delayed second component thereof to provide a transition envelope. A control generator receives the baseband signal and chroma and derives a control signal from transitions occurring in the baseband or in chroma in the absence of baseband transitions. A multiplier multiplies the transition envelope signal by the control signal to provide an enhancement product. A second adder combines the delay matched first component in phase with the enhancement product to put out the enhanced modulated subcarrier characterized by shortened transitions in alignment with simultaneous transitions in the baseband. An active chroma phase equalizer for processing the chroma sidebands is also disclosed.

    • A method for automatic control of non-linear image processing of a television signal subjected to degradation upon passage through a quality degrading medium is disclosed. The processing is of the type including at least one of image enhancement, and noise, ringing and interference reduction within the television signal. The method includes the steps of:a. generating a pilot signal having an amplitude and frequency selected to be representative of video transitions most susceptible to degradation during passage through the medium;b. adding the pilot signal to the television signal prior to its passage through the degrading medium and before any prepassage signal processing takes place;c. passing the television signal through the degrading medium;d. enhancing the television signal with image enhancement processing following its passage through the degrading medium and performing the additional steps of:(1) recovering the pilot signal;(2) converting the recovered pilot signal to an automatic adjustment control signal which is related to the amplitude of the recovered bursts;(3) automatically controlling the adjustments of the image enhancement processing with the automatic adjustment control signal; and preferably, although not necessarily,(4) removing the pilot signal bursts from the enhanced television signal upon completion of the image enhancement processing.

    • The system includes a recirculating delay line signal path which feeds a fractional component of delayed chroma to a summing junction where it is combined in proper phase with undelayed chroma and the composite is ordinarily put out. In the event of a detected vertical transition in the luminance channel, a control signal is generated in proportion to the amplitude of the detected transition. The control signal is used to switch the output over to the input chroma in proportion to the amplitude thereof. The vertical transition may be detected in luminance or in chrominance, or both in which case the control signal is a combination of the two. The chrominance transition control signal may be inhibited in the absence of chroma in the combed chroma path.

    • In arrangements for the frame rate upconversion of motion-picture-source video, a 60 Hz (interlaced field rate or progressive scan frame rate) television signal is converted to a form suitable for display on a variable-frame-rate high-resolution progressively-scanned monitor of the type typically associated with a computer or with a television set employing an increased frame rate. The inherent 3-2 motion picture film pulldown pattern in the source signal is changed to an equal time frame pattern, such as 3-3, 4-4, or 5-5, when the source signal is converted to a higher frame rate. This may be accomplished when the increased progressively-scanned video display frame rate is an integral multiple of the motion picture frame rate, namely 72 Hz, 96 Hz and 120 Hz.

    • Video sources from a progressively scanned camera are processed so as to simulate a video source derived from motion picture film. The simulated film source video creates a distinctive "pseudo-film pattern," in which at least some of every SDTV video field has no motion or low motion with respect to corresponding picture areas of the SDTV video field paired with it (occasional rare camera-originated scenes result in a field in which the entire picture has high motion, breaking the pseudo-film pattern). Corresponding picture areas within the pairs of fields having no motion or low motion are merged, in the manner in which interlaced fields derived from the same motion picture frame are merged. Corresponding picture areas within the pairs of fields having high motion are subject to interlace-to-progressive scan conversion processing which is not purely a merger of fields. The result, during a pseudo-film pattern, is a progressively-scanned picture tantamount to that produced by the progressively-scanned camera--no motion and low motion portions of the reproduced picture are very sharp and essentially identical to that of the original camera source, whereas high motion portions of the picture will have lower resolution, appearing slightly "fuzzy." The resulting psychovisual impression is essentially identical to that of an HDTV system which stays progressive all the way from the source to the display, but at a fraction of the complexity and cost.

Vertical bandwidth enhancement simulates a wide bandwidth vertical detail signal. The vertical detail signal is self-derived from the processed compatible signal itself.

The main path includes a scan line interpolation circuit and a time scale modification circuit which provide conventional two-dimensional scan conversion.
