    • An active contactless information storage device includes: an operation controller that determines whether mode information of the active contactless information storage device indicates a mode in which the device communicates with a reader/writer device; a carrier-sense controller that determines whether a first frequency in a first period and determines whether a second frequency in a second period, when the mode information of the active contactless information storage device indicates the mode in which the device communicates with the reader/writer device; and a command processor that performs communication with the reader/writer device when the carrier sense controller determines that the first frequency is sensed; wherein, when the mode information of the active contactless information storage device does not indicate the mode in which the active contactless information storage device communicates with the reader/writer device, the carrier-sense controller waits for a predetermined amount of time.

    • In an information access system, a reader/writer device encrypts, with a first encryption key, an information request and a second encryption key to thereby generate first encrypted data, and encrypts the information request with the second encryption key to thereby generate second encrypted data, and transmits cyclically an information request signal that alternately carries the first encrypted data and the second encrypted data. An active contactless information storage device receives the information request signal and decrypts the encrypted data carried by the information request signal with one encryption key stored in its memory. When the second encryption key different from the one encryption key is contained in the decrypted data, the information storage device rewrites the one encryption key with the second encryption key.

    • An information access system comprises a reader/writer for continually transmitting an ID request signal at a first frequency and being continuously ready to receive an RF signal at a second frequency, and an active contactless information storage device having a receiver for sensing a carrier of an RF signal at the first frequency, and a transmitter for transmitting a response signal at the second frequency when the ID request signal is received. When the receiver senses a carrier of an RF signal at the first frequency in a particular predetermined period, the receiver receives further the ID request signal, and, in response to the ID request signal, the transmitter transmits a response signal at the second frequency carrying an ID of the storage device stored. In the carrier sensing, the controller causes the receiver to be in an active state and the transmitter to be in an inactive state in the predetermined periods. When the receiver attempts to sense a carrier of the RF signal at the first frequency in a particular predetermined period but detects no carrier, the controller controls the receiver and the transmitter to maintain the inactive state during a sleep period between the particular predetermined period and the subsequent predetermined period.
