    • An apparatus and method of the present disclosure provides an automatic banding region detection function for detecting an image region that has a smooth linear transition of color intensity and is prone to have banding artifacts in image processing. The apparatus and method use a parametric model based approach to detect the banding region. The apparatus and method provide for segmenting at least one first image into at least one homogeneous color region (304), estimating the linear transition of color intensity for the at least one homogeneous color region (308), and if the linear transition of color intensity is substantially smooth, classifying the at least one homogenous color region as a banding region (310).

    • A system and method for spatiotemporal depth extraction of images are provided. The system and method provide for acquiring a sequence of images from a scene, the sequence including a plurality of successive frames of images, estimating the disparity of at least one point in a first image with at least one corresponding point in a second image for at least one frame, estimating motion of the at least one point in the first image, estimating the disparity of the at least one next successive frame based on the estimated disparity of at least one previous frame in a forward direction of the sequence, wherein the estimate disparity is compensated with the estimated motion, and minimizing the estimated disparity of each of the plurality of successive frames based on the estimated disparity of at least one previous frame in a backward direction of the sequence.

    • A system and method for scaling images are provided. An upscaling algorithm or function is employed that increases the size of an image and then filters the upscaled image to remove aliasing artifacts. The system and method provides for acquiring an image of a first size, detecting the geometry of the image, scaling the image to a second size, and filtering the scaled image with at least one filter based on the detected geometry. During the filtering process, the edges of objects in the upscaled image are detected and different filter frequency responses are provided for the detected edges. Providing different filter frequency responses for the detected edges preserves more details for line images.
