    • A connector is provided in order to enhance a tactile sensation by providing a restoring force to a lock piece and further to attain an original locking function at the fitting of both a male and female connector housing. A dome covering the upper edge of a lock piece is formed on a female housing, and an arm which protrudes rearwardly and which can be elastically deformed is affixed to the dome. A projecting contact part protrudes downwardly at the end of the arm and closely contacts the upper edge of the lock piece. When the male and female housings are interfitted, a gaff part on the lock piece engages a protrusion on the male housing and swings upwardly, and in accordance with it, elastically deforms the arm by pushing the projecting contact part. When the male and female housings are normally interfitted, the lock piece restores to its original position and is locked by engagement of the gaff part with the backside of the protrusion. The lock piece forcefully restores to its original position by receiving the restoring elastic force of the arm, therefore causing the end of the gaff part to snap onto the upper face of the male housing to generate a loud sound and an enhanced tactile sensation.

    • An inertia locking connector including elements which provide resistance to fitting the male and female connectors together. A consistent operating feel is obtained, even if the locking arm is released by the user. A resistance arm, independent of the locking arm, engages a rib of the male connector. A detent which is engaged by the locking arm is located on the same surface of the male connector as is the rib. The latter acts as a temporary stop for the resistance arm. Therefore, the user must exert substantial increased pressure to cause the resistance arm to flex out of contact with the leading edge thereof. As a result, the increased force builds momentum in the moving connectors so that the locking arm rides positively over the detent into its proper locking position.

    • A watertight connector is provided with an inertial locking mechanism, housings of which can be connected while making an operator feel and notice the completion of a connecting operation. The inertial locking mechanism 17 has resistance arms 22 and contact ribs 15 and is provided between male and female housings 11 and 20. A front annular projection 28A of a waterproof ring 27 mounted on the female housing 11 is brought into contact with the leading end of a receptacle 12 of a male housing 20 at a timing when the resistance arms 22 and the contact ribs 15 are brought into contact with each other during a connecting operation of the housings 11, 20. Thus, a peak P3 of a connection resistance value of the waterproof ring 27 and a peak P4 of a connection resistance value of the inertial locking mechanism 17 are synchronized to generate a large connection resistance, and a large inertial force can be obtained when this large connection resistance disappears.

    • Retaining members are formed separately from a female connector housing and can be installed on the female connector housing. A sealing member is installed within the female connector housing prior to the installation of the retaining members. The sealing member includes protrusions having retaining portions, which protrusions are inserted into guide channels of the female connector housing without bending. Then, the retaining members are installed on the female connector housing, and two protrusions of the retaining members engage with the retaining portions from opposite sides, whereby the sealing member is retained against removal. When the sealing members are installed, the protrusions and retaining portions are not elastically deformed, and therefore resistance during installation is reduced, and the installation can be easily carried out.

    • A connector assembly having a receiving housing, a fitting housing and a retainer. The fitting housing is inserted into the receiving housing and is held in engagement position by the retainer. However, if one or more electrical terminals, within cavities in the fitting housing, is not fully inserted into its locked position, the retainer is held in a temporary position wherein a portion thereof projects outwardly of the fitting housing. This portion engages the end face of the receiving housing. The end face is preferably perpendicular to the insertion direction or at an acute angle thereto. As a result, the receiving housing does not distort even if excessive insertion force is applied to the fitting housing and/or the retainer.
