    • A media delivery system is disclosed. The system comprises a media delivery unit and a handheld media player. According to one embodiment, the media delivery unit and the handheld device may be connected through a communication link, such as for example, the Bluetooth type of connection. While a media asset such as an audio asset is being delivered by the media delivery unit through a speaker system, a file including metadata of the media asset being played may be transferred from the media delivery unit to the handheld media player. The media asset in a desired form may be transferred to the player from a server based upon the received metadata. According to another embodiment, the handheld media player may include a receiving and recording unit. At least, a portion of an audio asset being played by the media delivery unit may be recorded by the player. An audio file analyzer may associate the audio file to a media asset in a media database. The identified audio asset may be presented to a user of the media player for purchasing.

    • An improved user interface for a home media delivery system is disclosed. The system comprises a media delivery unit, a removable media storage unit and a remote control device. In one embodiment, the media delivery system is a home audio system and the removable media storage unit is an optical disk. The invention is characterized by that metadata of the media assets stored in the removable storage unit is read out by the delivery unit after media storage unit is connected to the delivery unit. The metadata is transmitted wirelessly to the remote control device and is displayed on its display in a user selectable form. The user's selection is then transmitted to the delivery unit for directing the operation of the playback. The invention is further characterized by that the metadata may take a hierarchical form for at least two levels. The first level of data including basic information as authors, artists and genres is displayed at the first step and the second level of data including a more detailed description of the selected media asset is displayed after the user's selection.

    • A power management method for a handheld mobile computing and communication device for a normal and an emergency occasion is disclosed. The device, for example, is useful for a trapped person under a mound of debris created by a fallen building during an earthquake or a terrorist attack. The invention is based upon a conventional mobile communication device with a second communication unit and a sensory unit. The second communication unit is based upon a short-range and ad hoc communication network. The invention is characterized by that a power management unit is used to monitor the remaining power of a battery system for the mobile device. If the power is below a preset threshold, the main function of the mobile device as a mobile phone is switched off and the reserved power is used to supply power for the second communication unit, which consumes much less power, in particularly, in a mode as a receiver only. An authorized signal, delivered by a nearby mobile rescue station and received by the second communication unit, will trigger the power management unit to provide additional power to activate the sensory unit. The sensory unit such as an accelerometer and/or a gyroscope may detect a signal if the person touches and/or moves the device after receiving a triggering signal. Yet additional power is further supplied to send collected data through the second communication unit to the rescue station.

    • An improved hierarchical user interface for a handheld media player is disclosed, which classifies media assets that an on-line merchandiser intends to sell to the user as hidden files. The files are invisible to a user without a user's intended and persistent interaction with a user input device of the player. The media assets that an on-line merchandiser intends to sell to the user are stored in the unused storage capacity of the player and are organized in a single structure as those media assets owned by the user. A method includes a means that a user actuates a user input device until the hidden files are displayed. Furthermore, a method is disclosed to utilize a file storage system of a portable media player more effectively and efficiently. The unused storage capacity is then used by the on-line merchandiser to store media assets, which have not been purchased by the user at the moment when they are received by the media player. The capacity occupied by the media assets from the merchandiser is adjusted dynamically based upon the required capacity by the user at a specific time. The media assets stored are managed based on their assigned priorities.
