    • Provided are a method, system, and program for concurrent processing of operations in a boot sequence. A first processor signals a second processor to begin initialization and initializes computer resources. The second processor issues commands to initialize at least one storage device to place the at least one storage device in an operable state in response to the signaling by the first processor. The first process determines that one storage device including an operating system loader is operable and loads the operating system from the storage device including the operating system loader in response to determining that the storage device including the operating system loader is operable.

    • A method and system to support secure booting and configuration. The mechanism employs an optical link comprising a quantum channel that is used to send data encoded as quantum bits (qubits) via respective photons. Qubits encoded using a first random basis at the client and are sent to the boot server, which processes the qubits using a second random basis to extract the encoded data. A public channel is used to send data indicative of the second random basis to the client. A symmetric quantum key is then derived a both the client and the boot server using a comparison of the random basis' and the original and extracted data. The scheme enables the presence of an eavesdropper to be detected on the quantum channel. A DHCP message exchange is employed to obtain a network address, and, optionally, be provided with a network address for one or more boot servers. A boot image request is made to the boot server by the client, and a subsequent boot image is downloaded via a secure channel facilitated by the symmetric quantum key.

    • Method and apparatus for performing disk diagnostics and repairs on remote clients. The method employs an embedded LAN microcontroller at a client to submit diagnostic commands to disk drives hosted by the client. Corresponding diagnostic data is returned from the disk to the LAN microcontroller, and an XML file containing the diagnostic data is generated. The XML file is then packaged as a Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) message, which is bound to the Hyper Text Transport Protocol (HTTP), processed via an Internet Protocol (IP) microstack, and sent to a management server via an out-of-band (OOB) communication channel that is transparent to an operating system running on the client. Upon receipt of the SOAP message, the diagnostic data are extracted from the XML file using an XML schema application. A user may request diagnostics be performed for selected disk drives connected to selected client hosts, wherein the request is packaged as an XML file in a SOAP request message. Upon receiving the SOAP request message, the diagnostic commands are extracted from the XML file and submitted to the disk drive.
