A relay with a self holding function is inserted in a power supply line exclusively used for supplying electric power from a battery to the internal combustion engine control unit and its related devices.     • A control unit for an internal combustion engine is provided in which the number of input and output terminals can be reduced while maintaining the function of detecting an abnormality of an existing internal combustion engine and generating a warning based thereon, as a consequence of which the size and weight of the control unit is reduced.     • A knock control apparatus of ignition timing control type according to the present invention comprises, as one aspect thereof, a knock control level increasing means for augmenting a knock phenomenon suppressing function, so that, when the knock interval is short, the output characteristic of the integrating means is increased to raise the control level for suppressing the knock generating element in each cylinder of the engine, and that the integrating means output characteristic is invalidated when the condition of the internal combustion engine reaches the normal operating state.
