    • A process for raising roosting fowl includes subjecting newly-hatched fowl to infrared radiation for a limited period of time and decreasing visible light. The fowl mature in substantially total darkness. Temperature is controlled to keep the fowl comfortable. The fowl are given a protein rich diet for a time sufficient to allow substantially complete bone structure formation, at which time they are switched to a high carbohydrate diet to increase meat weight. The process reduces stress on the birds and keeps them docile, resulting in decreased handling, faster maturing, increased meat versus bone ratio and increased bird numbers per area of raising space.

    • A value setting mechanism constituting an interface between printing mechanism and an electronic accounting system in a franking machine has each value precisely set without possibility of alteration during a printing cycle. A four digit value can be set by rotating thumb wheels that transmit the value to encoding switches and printing elements. A spring loaded locking bar lies between aligned recesses on the wheels when properly set. To initiate a cycle a trip lever is electromagnetically moved from a first position to a second position releasing a clutch pawl to actuate the printing elements via a clutch and to close switches. If bar fails to enter aligned recesses, a detent unit prevents the trip lever from moving to the second position. When it does so move, an arm thereon inhibits detent unit from moving in a direction to allow bar to withdraw from the aligned recesses.

    • Where switches are used for encoding decimal digits into binary words for use in processing devices in, for example, postal franking machines where security is essential, failure modes that produce normal codes not corresponding to the input decimal digits have to be detected. The switch described reduces the number of failure modes which the processor cannot recognize as errors in that it produces two 1-out-of-5 coded words for each decimal digit to enable a processing device to test whether each word in fact contains only one "1" (or "0") and then to combine the two words to produce a 2-out-of-5 word corresponding to the selected decimal digit. The switch comprises five contact elements A to E each comprising inner and outer arcuate portions 10, 11 concentric with common rings 13, 14. A rotatable part having ten positions 0 to 9 can be set in any one of those positions to select a decimal digit, and comprises connected contacts for bridging an inner arcuate portion 10 and ring 13 as well as, at a diametrically opposite point, an outer arcuate portion 11 and ring 14. When the rotatable part has been set, the two corresponding 1-out-of-5 codes are signalled by scanning in sequence the common rings and reading the five contact elements A to E.

    • The website hosted by the server is a collection of separately recorded musical tracks with the music containing a minimum of at least one musical instrument or vocal. Users may record additional tracks of music to add to a primary track. There is one primary track and up to six accompaniment or comptracks. The server allows the client to add one or more tracks to any other tracks for a given song title within the database. Separate tracks then selected by the client and mixed in the mixer into a single sound recording which is then communicated over the server across the internet to the client so the client may hear the finished or composite mixed musical work. If the mixed or composite composition is not to the liking of the user, then different tracks may be selected or rerecorded mixed in sample again.

    • A safety switch assembly for deactivating a motor vehicle if a user is not positioned on a vehicle seat. The assembly includes a base for mounting a switch, a cover that moves in response to the presence of a vehicle operator on the seat, and an actuator that moves with the cover to open and close switch contacts inside a switch housing. The base is constructed to pass through a cutout in a vehicle seat pan and includes extensions that also pass through the cutout. The projections are inhibited from movement back through the cutout after the base is rotated from an orientation that allows the projections to be inserted through the cutout to an orientation in which the projections overlie the seat pan.

    • A switch comprises a plunger, a retainer, a pair of terminals and an electrically-conducting wiper contact having a curved or bent middle portion defining two oppositely directed legs on either side of the middle portion. The retainer cooperates with the plunger to carry the wiper contact as the plunger moves between a normal and an actuated position. The terminals have facing contact surfaces for biased engagement with the portions of the legs exposed by the plunger and retainer to form an electrical path between the terminals when the plunger is in the actuated position. The plunger and the retainer are coupled together by arms which project from either the plunger or the retainer. The wiper contact is secured between the plunger and retainer without the need for forming a central loop in the wiper contact for engagement by the plunger.

    • A switch for controlling the operation of a motor boat comprises a cylinder and a key. The key includes a grippable knob and a detachable key actuator which engages a key-receiving member in the cylinder. The knob is turned from a first stable angular orientation (that is, an off-position) to a second stable angular orientation (that is, an on-position) to operate the motor. The knob is also coupled by means of a lanyard to the operator. If the operator falls overboard, the knob will separate from the key actuator and springs located inside the cylinder return the switch to the off-position. The switch also permits the a choke signal to be sent to the motor by pressing inwardly on the knob.
