    • A brake apparatus for a vehicle includes a brake operation unit, a master cylinder, and an electrically controlled hydraulic source. The brake apparatus also includes a wheel cylinder to retard rotation of a wheel using hydraulic pressure generated either by the master cylinder or the electrically controlled hydraulic source. The brake apparatus further includes a hydraulic path connecting the master cylinder, the wheel cylinder, and the electrically controlled hydraulic source. The brake apparatus further includes a shut-off valve electrically controlled and operated to alternatively close and open part of the hydraulic path, an operation pressure measuring unit measuring hydraulic pressure generated by the master cylinder, and a braking pressure measuring unit measuring hydraulic pressure acting on the wheel cylinder. Operation of the apparatus is controlled by a control unit capable of changing magnitude of drive current to be supplied to the shut-off valves depending on values measured by the operation pressure measuring unit and the braking pressure measuring unit.

    • A process for calculating estimated vehicle speeds on the basis of wheel speeds of the vehicle wheels and a value resulting from addition of an offset value corresponding to an output error including a dispersion component and a slope component of an output from a longitudinal acceleration/deceleration sensor to a detection value detected by the longitudinal acceleration/deceleration sensor. In a condition in which it is determined that a vehicle is traveling at a substantially constant speed for a relatively long period of time, a first correction amount is calculated from an average value of variations in wheel speeds and an average value of outputs from the longitudinal acceleration/deceleration sensor during the long period of time. In a condition in which it is determined that the vehicle is traveling at a substantially constant speed for a relatively short period of time, a second correction amount is calculated from the average value of variations in wheel speeds and the average values of outputs from the longitudinal acceleration/deceleration sensor during the short period of time. An amount of correction of the zero point of the longitudinal acceleration/deceleration sensor is determined by the first correction amount, and the correction of the offset value is determined by the second correction amount.

    • Systems and methods to prevent dragging of a fluid pressure type disk brake system are described herein. Brake fluid pressure generated by a master cylinder during a braking operation is transmitted to a wheel cylinder via a VSA system. The VSA system includes a low pressure accumulator and an out-valve disposed between the wheel cylinder and the low pressure accumulator. Temporarily opening the out-valve during a braking operation allows part of the brake fluid that would otherwise be supplied to the wheel cylinder to be supplied to the low pressure accumulator. After the braking operation by the driver is completed, brake fluid supplied to the wheel cylinder is returned to the master cylinder. Thus, a piston of the wheel cylinder is withdrawn by an extra amount corresponding to the amount of brake fluid supplied to the low pressure accumulator, thus reliably prevents disk pad dragging in the disk brake system.

The brake system also includes an opening and closing valve in a fluid passage connecting the slave cylinder to the wheel cylinder. When a problem occurs with the slave cylinder, the opening and closing valve is closed for a predetermined amount of time.
