    • A method for locking an input area associated with a force-based touch interface comprises detecting a first touch value associated with a first user interaction with a first area of a touch interface. The first touch value includes information indicative of a location of the first area of the touch interface. The method also comprises establishing a first virtual input area based on the location, wherein a boundary associated with first virtual input area is contained within a boundary defined by the touch interface. The method also comprises detecting a second touch value associated with a second user interaction with the touch interface, and determining that a location associated with the second touch value is within the first virtual input area. The method also involves generating a control signal for causing execution of a first function, based on the determination that the second touch value is within the first virtual input area.

    • Human machine interfaces that increase selectability and reduce distractibility of an operator controlling a system in a distracted operating environment are disclosed. A method can include receiving a first gesture on a pressure sensitive input device, and receiving a second gesture in temporal proximity to the first gesture on the pressure sensitive input device. The first and second gestures can be characterized by discretized time and pressure metrics. Additionally, the method can include selecting a control message from a plurality of control messages based on a combination of the first and the second gestures, and sending the selected control message to the system. A total number of control messages can be related to a number of each of the discretized time and pressure metrics for the first and second gestures. Additionally, the size of the discretized time and pressure metrics can be tuned to reduce distraction of the operator.

    • Pressure sensors for sending a plurality of control messages to a system controller are disclosed herein. An example pressure sensor may include: a base; at least first and second conductors; a pressure sensitive material at least partially intervening between the first and second conductors; a memory; a clock; and a processor. The pressure sensitive material may have a composition configured to continuously change at least one electrical property. The processor may be configured to determine a first electrical property using the first and second conductors, associate the first electrical property with a time from the clock and write the first electrical property and the time to the memory. The processor may also be configured to calculate a time-based change in the first electrical property, correlate the time-based change with at least one of the control messages and communicate the at least one of the control messages to the system controller.
