    • A process for determining when sounding packets are to be triggered and transmitted in a wireless beamforming system is disclosed. In one embodiment, a timer is programmably set to adapt to the operating environment. Whenever the timer elapses, a sounding packet is triggered and the timer resets. In another embodiment, the sounding packet is triggered by comparing measured correlations of channel characteristics against a programmable correlation threshold. If a measured correlation falls below the correlation threshold, this indicates that the channel has undergone a relatively large change. In response, a new sounding packet is triggered to update the beam steering matrix. Otherwise, the previous beam steering matrix is still used. Thereby, sounding packets are expeditiously triggered to keep the beam steering matrix updated with minimal impact to the over-the-air bandwidth.

    • A mechanism for processing beamforming steering matrices in a transceiver system. A plurality of beamforming steering matrices associated with a plurality of subcarriers of an RF signal received at the transceiver system are generated. The beamforming steering matrices are compressed and stored. The beamforming steering matrices may also be grouped or sub-sampled prior to being stored. The beamforming steering matrices are decompressed and ungrouped before being applied to data to be transmitted. Prior to ungrouping the beamforming steering matrices, a phase difference between corresponding beamforming steering vectors of consecutive beamforming steering matrices is determined. Phase rotation is performed on the corresponding beamforming steering vectors based on the determined phase difference associated with the corresponding beamforming steering vectors to improve phase continuity between consecutive beamforming steering matrices.

    • A network coordinator can assign an association identifier (AID) and/or a group identifier (GID) to identify a client station to which a packet is to be transmitted and to enable the client station to determine whether to receive an incoming packet. The network coordinator can randomly generate a base AID that is representative of the network coordinator and can assign at least one AID to client stations to minimize the probability of client stations associated with proximate network coordinators being assigned the same AIDs. The network coordinator can also randomly assign at least one GID to a group of client stations to minimize the probability of groups of client stations associated with the proximate network coordinators being assigned the same GID. The client station can analyze indications of a received AID and/or received GID to determine whether to receive the packet or whether to switch to an inactive power state.

    • A method of processing a signal in a wireless network including multiple chains is provided. This method can include receiving the signal in a receiver and, for each chain, performing a Barker correlation on the signal to generate a Barker correlated signal. At this point, an autocorrelation can be performed on the Barker correlated signal to generate an autocorrelated signal. The autocorrelated signals from the multiple chains can be summed to generate a summed output. Additional processing, e.g. at least one of CCK weak signal detection, peak selection in a rake receiver, frequency estimation, and differential decoding, can then be performed based on the summed output.

    • Techniques for estimating a cost of executing a query are provided. A query includes multiple predicates, each of which is associated with a selectivity value that indicates a percentage of input that satisfies the condition of the corresponding predicate. The selectivity values are used to determine an estimated cost of executing the query. In one technique, a group of multiple predicates of a query are treated as a single predicate. Thus, a single selectivity value, rather than multiple selectivity values, is determined for that group. In a related technique, instead of determining a selectivity value of a predicate in isolation with respect to other predicates of a query, the selectivity value of a set of one or more predicates in a query is generated based on other predicates in the query.

    • A unique volume license key (VLK) is provided to a volume license holder. A signed file containing the VLK and the data derived from volume license holder's submitted computing environment information is provided to the volume license holder along with the licensed software. The license file is stored in a central location, such as on an installation server, or locally on client machines, in a rather large file of any type. Upon logon, the license file is read, the data authenticated and the system is activated. If license data cannot be authenticated, a connected system either fully functions in grace period or run in reduced functionality mode until authentication succeeds. If the system is disconnected, the system is functional only with disconnected features until it joins a network again. In a completely off-line installation, the license file is generated by the volume license holder using software vendor assigned specific VLK and software vendor provided security hardware device. The distribution methods of software package, the VLK, and the license file can be flexible, including, but not limited to, single or multiple media.
