    • Disconnected from the powerline, a battery-powered receiver is configured to conserve power. The receiver communicates information between a local controller and a communication network that uses the powerline and a radio frequency (RF) band to propagate messages. An antenna wirelessly detects the presence of the powerline carrier signal that radiates into free space, which indicates a first message encoded onto the powerline. A computer processor wakes up from an inactive state based on the presence of the carrier signal and receives a second message via a second RF signal having a different frequency than the powerline carrier signal, and determines whether the device address in the second message is the assigned address of the receiver. If the message is not addressed to the receiver, the receiver returns to an inactive state.

    • The presently described apparatus and method extends the capabilities of an Insteon network of devices. The method includes transmitting a group command message from a first device to a selected group of devices having a common group number, and receiving the group command message by a second device of the group or receiving a clean-up message transmitted by the first device, and resetting the state of the second one of the devices, and transmitting an acknowledgement message to the first devices from the second device, and receiving the first acknowledgement message by a third one of the devices that had not received the group command message or a clean-up message previously, and restoring the state of the third one of the devices.

    • A cloud server communicates with a network controller over communication channels of a communication network to securely install a new device having a unique identifier and a device key onto a home-control network associated with a network key. The network device sends its unique identifier over the home-control network to the network controller and the network controller passes the unique identifier over the communication channels to the cloud server. the cloud server retrieves a device key associated with the network device based on the unique identifier and transmits the device key to the network controller over the communication channels. The network controller sends a message comprising the device key to the network device over the home-control network. The message is formatted to deliver the network key to the network device to permit the network device to send and receive messages comprising the network key over the home-control network.
