    • Methods and systems are provided for overriding a most-recently-used (MRU) table for system acquisition. In an embodiment, a mobile station maintains an MRU table populated with data identifying one or more networks to which the mobile station was most recently connected, and the mobile station is arranged to conduct system acquisition by referencing the MRU table prior to referencing a preferred roaming list (PRL). The mobile station receives an MRU-override instruction from a wireless network, and modifies its MRU table according to the instruction, producing a modified MRU table, and conducts at least one subsequent system acquisition with reference to the modified MRU table.

    • Methods and systems are provided for selectively conducting reverse-link power control and call admission control. In an embodiment, a base station identifies a set of mobile stations more likely than others to experience a dropped call. For each mobile station in the set, the base station relaxes at least one reverse-link power-control setting, to foster an increased actual and/or allowed reverse-link transmission-power level. The base station thereafter detects the dropped-call rate exceeding a first threshold, and responsively decreases the degree to which at least one setting was relaxed. The base station thereafter detects the dropped-call rate exceeding a higher threshold, and responsively drops at least one active call and/or blocks at least one new call.

    • A radio access network (RAN) allocates a resource, such as a forward traffic channel, to a mobile station that is engaged in a call. During the call, the RAN monitors a reverse link signal that is received from the mobile station. If the RAN detects a reception failure, such as the receipt of an errored frame in the reverse link signal, the RAN determines the power level that the mobile station used to transmit the reverse link signal when the reception failure occurred. If the mobile station was already transmitting at its maximum power level, the RAN may immediately release the resource. Otherwise, the RAN defines a test period that is sufficient for the mobile station to increase its transmit power to the maximum level. If the reception failure continues throughout the test period, the RAN may then release the resource.

    • A method is disclosed for disambiguating a reported pilot signal so as to facilitate handoff of a mobile station. When a radio access network (RAN) receives from a mobile station a handoff request carrying a parameter that ambiguously identifies at least two sectors as the potential handoff target, the RAN will send a test probe on at least one of the potential handoff target sectors and will determine, based on mobile station response to the test probe, which sector the mobile station received the test probe on and thus which sector was the intended handoff target. The RAN may then direct the mobile station to hand off to that sector if appropriate. Further, the RAN may add the identified sector into a neighbor list of a similarly situated other mobile station, to allow the other mobile station to more efficiently hand off to the same sector if appropriate.

    • Disclosed herein is a method for repeat paging in a wireless communication system. In accordance with the method, a RAN controller will send a repeat-paging directive to a plurality of BTSs to cause each BTS to begin broadcast of a series of page messages destined to a target mobile station. While transmitting the series, one of the BTSs will then receive from the mobile station a page response, and the BTS will responsively provide to the RAN controller a notification of the page response. In response to receipt of the notification, the RAN controller will then send a paging-stop directive to at least each other BTS of the plurality, and each BTS that receives the paging-stop directive will responsively discontinue broadcasting the series of page messages before completing broadcast of the entire series of page messages, thereby helping to conserve air interface resources.
