    • A flexible strap connector is disclosed. The connector comprises a strap having a buckle head at one end and a tongue at the opposite end. Ratchet teeth extend on one side of the strap and the ratchet teeth cooperate with the buckle head to permit movement of the strap in a first direction and to prevent movement of the strap in a second direction. A second slot is formed in the strap itself and it is a non-locking slot. When the strap is in the second slot, the strap is free to move further into the slot and free to be withdrawn from the slot. Embodiments where the buckle head and ratchet teeth are replaced with hook and loop fasteners are also disclosed.

    • An improved wheel rim, an improved spoke nipple and an improved wheel are disclosed. The rim has spoke openings and a threaded end of each spoke extends therethrough. An internal nipple with a threaded bore is connected to the threaded spoke end so that a first, ball-shaped, rounded end of the nipple is seated on the rim. A portion of the rim around each spoke opening is deformed or removed so as to define a portion of a socket with the same curvature as the first end of the nipple. This minimizes the required diameter of the spoke opening in the rim and maximizes the area of the rim socket surface. The invention also extends to an external nipple with a rounded collar in combination with a rim including a concave rounded rim surface formed in the rim itself.

    • Improvements in torque transmitting wheels are disclosed. The improvements afford more balanced torque transmission as between the proximal spokes, adjacent to a torque transmitting member, such as a sprocket, sprocket cluster or disc for a brake, and the distal spokes which are opposite from the torque transmitting member. A wheel according to the present invention is provided with radially oriented proximal spokes and tangentially oriented distal spokes. This shifts the majority of the torque transmission task to the distal spokes which, in a torque transmitting wheel, are under less tension than proximal spokes under static conditions. A torque transmitting member is mounted on the hub, adjacent the proximal hub flange, and the distance from the proximal hub flange to a plane through the proximal edge of the rim is substantially less than the corresponding distance from the distal hub flange. The torque transmitting member is mounted so that, when it is rotated in a first direction, the rotation is always transmitted to the hub. A plurality of the spoke members radially connect the rim to the proximal hub flange while a second plurality thereof tangentially connect the rim to the distal hub flange so that more of any torque applied to the torque transmitting member is transmitted through the tangentially oriented, distal spoke members than through the radially oriented, proximate spokes.

    • A tensioned spoked wheel assembly with a wheel center plane is disclosed. The wheel comprises a hub with a first hub flange on one side of the wheel center plane and a second hub flange on the other side of the wheel center plane, a rim and spokes or other tensioning means. The spokes which are connected to the first hub flange are, in turn, connected to the rim at a first set of circumferentially spaced points and spokes which are connected to the second hub flange are, in turn, connected to the rim at points which are circumferentially coincident with the first set of circumferentially spaced points. In other words, spokes or tensioning members from first and second hub flanges are paired or grouped at the rim so as to provide a wheel which exhibits, under load, zero, or substantially reduced, by comparison with the prior art, net force vectors parallel to the rotational axis, at any and all given points on the rim, as opposed to a wheel where a spoke from the first hub flange is attached to the rim at a point which is circumferentially spaced a substantial distance from the closest point on the rim where a spoke from the second hub flange is connected. Bicycles having a front wheel, a rear wheel, or a front and rear wheel according to the invention are also disclosed. The bicycle is not susceptible to speed shimmy or wobble, when it includes a front wheel according to the invention.

    • A baggage inspection system has a conveyor path disposed between an X-ray source, which genertes an X-ray beam, and a radiation detector for detecting radiation passing through articles on the conveyor path. The conveyor path is formed by two surfaces disposed at a right angle relative to each other, with the right angle being inclined relative to the horizontal so that articles on the conveyor path are forced by gravity to lie against one of the surfaces. At least one of the surfaces is a moveable surface, and the other surface may also be a moveable surface, or a roller surface or a plate against which the articles slide. The radiation detector may be an angled detector row so as to encompass substantially all of the radiation beam within its field of view.

The conveyor path is disposed between an x-ray source for generating the beam and a radiation detector. The radiation detector consists of a number of individual detectors, with the number of individual detectors per unit length being greater in a first region of the detector than in a second region thereof. The first region is disposed at the level of the conveying path for optimally displaying smaller articles transported by the conveyor path, while the second region is suited for display of larger articles.

    • A chopper circuit arrangement for charging an electronic flash discharge capacitor and for turning off the chopper is disclosed. The arrangement operates from a D.C. source and includes chopper transistors and a transformer operating together as a converter. Regenerative means, including a feedback winding of the transformer, function to charge the flash discharge capacitor. The arrangement includes transistors disposed across the chopper transistors to block or hold the converter off. These blocking transistors are activated when the voltage across the discharge capacitor has achieved a predetermined value. The arrangement includes means for effectuating blocking of the converter only during the off condition of the chopper. The arrangement also includes means for delaying the charge of the discharge capacitor, after discharge, for a predetermined time.
