摘要： An improved agitator construction is provided for an automatic clothes washing machine in which a surface or contour of a vane carried on a portion of the agitator which is intermittently rotated in a single direction is shaped to enhance engagement between the vane and the items being washed and to retard the items from moving at least one of radially and upwardly relative to the agitator. The vane, which may be a helical vane, may be provided with a lower surface angled downwardly and outwardly in a radial direction, or may be provided with one or more steps having a relatively steep sloped wall facing in a direction leading away from the direction of rotation of the agitator and a relatively shallow sloped wall facing in a direction leading toward the direction of rotation of the agitator, or both shapes.

The auger comprises a tubular body defining a peripheral surface and having a central longitudinal axis. A vane spirals around the tubular body and extends from the peripheral surface from a root having a thickness T to a tip. The vane has a width W measured from the peripheral surface along a line perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis to the tip. The vane is formed by a plurality of ledges, with adjacent ledges joined by steps. With this configuration, the vane can have a relatively small root thickness T and a relatively large width W.

摘要： An automatic washer for washing garments comprises a wash basket with an open top defining a wash chamber, and a clothes mover mounted in the washer for reciprocal movement about an axis of rotation within the wash chamber. The clothes mover comprises an apron, and at least one vane extending from the apron and defining a working surface having an upper edge and a lower edge, the upper edge and the lower edge extending from an outer end to an inner end. At least one line lying along the working surface and extending between the outer end and the inner end defines a constant angle of attack relative to the direction of movement of the clothes mover. The working surface is configured to move the garments along the working surface at a substantially instantaneously uniform speed. The configurations of the upper surface and the working surface are optimized to move the garments between the perimeter and the axis of rotation while minimizing force acting on the working surface. The working surface defines a local draft angle that increases from the outer end to the inner end.

摘要： A method and apparatus for washing cloth items in an automatic washer is provided wherein the automatic washer includes a wash basket defining a wash chamber and an impeller located within the bottom of the wash chamber. The method includes loading cloth items into the wash chamber and then supplying a quantity of wash liquid into the wash chamber sufficient to moisten the cloth items but insufficient to cause the cloth items to lose frictional engagement with the impeller as the impeller oscillates. The impeller is oscillated to apply a drag force to the cloth items in contact with the impeller such that the cloth items in contact with the impeller move angularly along an arc-like path. Angular movement of the cloth items disposed along the bottom of the wash chamber beyond the outer periphery of the impeller is impeded such that relative angular motion is created between the cloth items disposed along the periphery of the impeller and the cloth items disposed immediately above the impeller. Cloth items move radially inward along the impeller, move upwardly in the center of the wash chamber, move radially outwardly along the top of the wash chamber and move downwardly along the side wall of the wash chamber in a pattern which may be referred to as an inverse toroidal rollover path or pattern. This inverse toroidal rollover pattern is created by direct contact between the oscillating impeller and the cloth items supported above the impeller.
